I currently have a Denon 1803 receiver that doesn't have an HDMI inputs so I'm looking to get a blu ray player that can decode Dolby/DTS HD and send it via the analogue outputs. Can anyone recommend a unit that supports this

You mean the lossless codecs right? (DTS-MA/TrueHD)

Both the Panny BD55 and the Sony S550 will do it for about $400.

Between the two, which is a better buy in terms of functions and quality? I know there are better deals being offered on the Sony S550, but that is not important to me. I'd rather spend a little more but get the better player of the two.

There is a thread on AVS Forum that does a direct comparison between the Sony and Panny. I do not think there is any consensus, though. Each player has pros and cons, with the end result being they are about equal.
