I have my heart set on a front projector, but I can't quite swing the payments. Meanwhile, my 32" monitor is biting the dust after twelve years of great picture quality, and I need to replace it. My budget is around $600. I am looking for a flat screen, widescreen display, preferably 35" or so, that will offer me really good image quality from DVD source. Any suggestions?

The closest thing you're gonna find for $600 in an HD-capable widescreen direct view is the 26" Samsung (Sears usually has them in stock for $599) or for about a hundred more the 30" Sanyo at WalMart. The latter actually has an enthusiastic following over at AVS forums. It has an ota HD tuner built in, the Sammy requires an external box.

I think I've also seen 26" Toshiba and 30" Philips sets for within shouting distance of your price at Costco.

    32" 4:3 monitor????

You will want like a 40" widescreen then, or else you 4:3 material will be very small in original aspect ratio. (No zooms or stretches)...

I think I would look at CRT RPTV's for a bargain that as close as possible fits your budget.

Maybe something like this on the ultra cheap....
These are the guys I got my 60" from...
