Which, in your opinion, offers better picture quality for watching DVDs and why?

You have to be more specific about models. I personally feel that plasmas have better PQ on the whole than RPTV's, regardless of the source. However, this is a gross generalization and some individual examples will not fall in line. There are some plasmas that are not as good with any source compared to the better RPTV's.

For strict DVD viewing, I recommend the Panasonic 42" WD5U model. It has great overall PQ. Specific to DVD's (and NTSC broadcasts) its resolution of 853x480 means that it will display a DVD signal without any native resolution scaling. That means fewer artifacts. Bottom line is its DVD picture is pretty well unparelled by any display device I've seen south of $5K. And it is surprisingly decent for HD as well, in spite of the resolution.
