Back in the day, my taskbar always displayed the volume control, but somewhere along the way it disappeared. In trying to add it now, I get an error message stating that the volume control is not installed and I need to add it via the add/remove programs section of control panel.

Of course, there is no such animal listed as volume control under add/remove programs.

    I appreciate any advice,

    Jon

Assuming you have a sound card properly installed, it just depends on which OS you are using.

For example, under Windows XP it is as simple as -
Control Panel --> Sounds and Audio Devices --> check box "place volume icon on taskbar"

I think you've got a bit of a problem if it says you need to install it via add/remove
something might have happened to your os installation

i've never heard of that problem before so I don't really have a suggestion however, sorry.

Try what Kelvin suggested. If that doesn't work, something's wrong.
