Do DVD players have any method to adjust pixel cropping
or is that amount fixed and handled in the firmware?

What is considered acceptable and unacceptable pixel
cropping for both top and bottom and left and right
(as displayed by the Avia disc)?

Some players have adjustable pixel cropping (electronic matting), some don't.
DVD's correctly have 704 to 720 pixels all the way across each scan line. Ordinarily I prefer no pixel cropping except if the DVD had 704 while the player was set to 720, there could be non-black garbage at the far right edge. If the digital to analog conversion "overscans" the analog scan line in the final output stages, pixels will be lost off of both left and right edges.
There may be tiny pots inside the DVD player which you can adjust pixel cropping with.
If the player has pixel cropping, overscan in the TV will lop off even more of the picture.
