Given the choice of a substantial extra, such as Into Pitch Black, or a completely redundant, space-hogging surround-sound track, I'll take the former every time--especially since this is simply a great-sounding movie in either 5.1 format.
I just saw Pitch Black for the first time ever last night and liked the movie so much that I found this thread. Can't believe I didn't watch the movie sooner!
I have to say the DTS soundtrack on this movie is excellent! Amazing use of the surround field especially during the dark scenes with the aliens surrounding the characters.
The acting was mediocre, except for Vin Diesel's excellent performance (as usual) which offsetted the performances of the other actors. The story was great, picture and sound of the DVD were above average.
Why does this thread on this forum say the DVD is DD EX and DTS ES? As far as my receiver indicated, it was only plain Dolby Digital and plain DTS (no ES or EX flags).
Ahhh, I remember when this DVD first came out. It is a DTS-ES (matrix at least) and DD EX soundtrack, just not marked on the packaging. (It came out in the early days of EX and ES.)
Interesting, in that Amazon only has the new one marked as DTS-ES:
