I just read this in a press release for the VSDA DVD Technical Awards here and I'm a little surprised.

This disc is OK, but has edge enhancement and compression artefacts galore and certinly wouldn't be a contender for 'best' transfer in my books. There are vastly better transfers even among the winners of the other VSDA categories: the Indiana Jones Trilogy. LOTR:TTT and Alien Trilogy among them (Alien looks amazing and is better than Pirates in every department!). There are some well-known names among the jury, too. What happened?

    I am greatly disappointed.
Why not just give it too Gangs of New York.
It just shows how deep into 'glitzy' transfers the industry is.

I can't believe Pirates didn't win for DVD-ROM features. That's the most notable aspect of the disc for me.

Wow, it didn't take long for these awards to lose their credibility.

They were going to, but Disney slipped the judges more money.

That was the big surprise winner for me. When I went home for Christmas, I played around with the DVD-ROM features of Pirates and was pleasantly surprised to see that they were actually worthwhile.

What difference could these awards possibly make to anyone, really? They are purely symbolic. I doubt if PIRATES is going to sell even a dozen additional copies because of it. People are so award-crazy that the whole process practically ceases to have meaning.

Disney owns GANGS OF NEW YORK, also. Of course, it wouldn't have qualified, having been released two years ago.

i just watched pirates on starz-hd, and it doesnt look too much better then the dvd.

it looks as if they are just playing the dvd and broadcasting it on the air.

    ringing is everywere.

i was looking forward to seeing the hd version in hopes that it ;ooked good but no such luck.

i rented this title expecting to see Giant-like (the James Dean film) haloing and i was surprised that i didn't really notice anything anywhere near what the hue and cry was.
i noticed maybe 3 or four shots in the film where i could "ok, yeah ...definitely ringing there" but otherwise i thought it look great.

this was on a front projector too.

never saw it in the theater, never bought it, but i do have a rain check to pick it up for $10 and probably will in the next week or so.

    TonyD-

the Starz "hd" transfer didn't look better than the dvd because it wasn't. not only is it an upconvert (like most of what you see on Starz HD), i think it actually looked a little worse than the dvd. Same with 25th Hour, it looked like it had more ringing and EE than even the dvd has (which is saying a lot!).

I agree the transfer is terrible. Whomever did the voting must have either been paid off or been watching the movie on a 20" set because the EE/Ringing and such is god awful on that disc.

The opening fight scene in "Gangs" still looks the absolute worst to me. A travesty... Unwatchable...

IRRC, the DTS sampler disc that contains a clip from Pirates actually has the best transfer of the film I have seen, too bad its only about 5 minutes of the movie.
