Interesting that the press release states it's "picking up where its Oppo rivals left off". At this price point it would be a competitor for the UDP-205, yet the Pioneer only has 2-channel analog outputs. That's a strange choice if they're aiming to tempt the audiophile customer interested in multichannel SACD and DVD Audio playback. It doesn't support DSD either.

No DSD? That's a curious decision for a SACD capable player. I'm even less interested now. I use DSD both with my Sony X800 and old Oppo DVD player for SACD playback.

Maybe I'm just reading the specs wrong. They display the DSD logo but there is otherwise no mention of it...

As a projector owner, how will this compare to the Panasonic 820, which for half the price is reported to be the best at HDR to SDR tone mapping?
From everything I've read, the Panasonic 820 is the player to have for projector owners. I don't own a projector, but the Panny is still the player I'm leaning heavily towards for a Dolby Vision capable player to replace my Sony X800.

Uh oh
EXCLUSIVE: Onkyo Insolvent, Struggling To Stave Off Bankruptcy – channelnews
from the article:

"Onkyo said that their 2020 global revenues dropped 49.3% to $200.4 million or 49.3% they had revenues of $395 million in fiscal 2019.

The company booked a record net loss for the year of $90.8 million, as compared to a small profit in 2019 of $306,000."

I also heard a rumor that Pioneer are exiting the BD player market.
Not good.
