Pioneer VSX-37tx receiver or Sherwood/Carver separates (1 Viewer)

Simple question- all extras and conveniences aside, which would in your opinion simply sound the best for 5.1 Home Theater in a small to medium size room?

Sherwood Newcastle AVP-9080 pre/pro feeding a Carver 806x THX certified Amp

or

Pioneer Elite VSX-37TX THX-Ultra certified receiver.
