At the American Appliance bankruptcy blowout, I found a Pioneer LD player for $113 that's a display model. It's a little beat up looking. Assuming it works, should I buy it?
They are ripping people off left and right, charging ludicrous prices for things like a console (with wood all around it) TV for original SRP!

Jeff, it totally depends on the model of it. Id not want to give you (or accept) a free one, if a real early model. On the other hand, nicer Pioneers are selling for $350 (704) to $800 for an elite 99.

It's a later model, 95-96 or so by the look. It does have an RF out for DD 5.1, so that's covered
I'll take a free one though :)
What's also good, is that there's a store not too far away that sells used LDs really cheap. So I can make 1 trip :)

If it works, I'd go for it. I've done a wee bit of looking for used ones, but I haven't been lucky enough to find someone that doesn't know the proper value or the players. Its going to get harder and harder to find them as time goes on. I'd like to get a backup for mine just in case.

I have the Pioneer cld d504 which has a AC3 out but does not have optical/coaxial out; hence DTS LDs DO NOT work.

I'd still need an RF modulator though correct? I understand those are hard to come by/expensive?

My preamp (sony TAE 9000es) has one built in....it'll generally say AC3 RF input
I see them pretty regularly on this site
also try www.ubid.com
I see them there for ~$30-50 occasionally
I pick up great movies for $3 to 5...considering the DVDs are $25 -30..you'll make it up quick and sacrifice little
Bought a collection of 60 from a garage sale for $80 and sold off 20 for $50 (40 for $30?!?!!? ...if renting was so cheap!!!)
