I am just wondering out of all the projection hdtv's is the pioneer Elite the cream of the crop?
No single brand is. Pioneer's Elite line features way-above-average build quality, and, according to some reviews, various units are pretty good out of the box (though, like all displays, they need calibrating to look their best).
But Pioneer's high-end RPTVs and not intrinsically better than products by other reputable manufacturers (such as Toshiba, Sony, Hitachi, etc.).
This is more than a "basic" question. You are likely to get more opinions over in the "TV and Projectors" fourm. I'll move you on over.
All sets have their own particular demons ... Pioneer is no different.
What you get for the high cost is a set that is more than likely set up better out of the box. No guarantees.
Build quality is very good ...
But for pure image quality after a proper set up, it is pretty much the same as a Mitsubishi or Sony or Panasonic or Hitachi ... if we ignore the demons factor.
A reminder that throwing money at a TV does not get you the best image OOTB.
A person going the economy route with a 53" Panasonic, but gets his TV properly calibrated, will end up with an image that is superior to the Pioneer Elite (without tweaking.).
What sources are we talking about? HD? DVD? So the line doubler and stretch modes in the $1700 Panasonic is as good as the Elites?
