How can Pioneer sell their projection TV's at almost double other manufaturers and get away with it? Are they really that much better?

    Short answer: yes.

There are cheaper Pioneer non-Elite sets that offer more bang for the buck, though.

I have to disagree with Masood unless you have money to burn.

The Elites are quite fine, but not twice as good as the regular Pioneer line. The Pioneer 533 recently tested out top notch. List price $3,500. It is available delivered for $2,700. The 53 inch Elite will cost you twice that.

Is this not the nature of high end? You can get 90% for a few bucks, but each % after that is going to cost you big time. As you get closer to perfection it gets harder and harder to improve it, and takes more and more extreme measures to get even a marginal improvement. If you want the best, usually you don't get a good cost to performance ratio in anything.
