Somebody on another site pointed me to the Pioneer DV-533K aka DV-5310KD (with region free)
    Reports are:
    Codefree and RCE compatible
Slimline (5.5 cm thick) with nice gold colour
Progressive scan (Can't confirm this this, and dunno about scaling)
    Component out.
    PAL NTSC conversion
    Better remote than Malata
    Dual laser pickup (with DVD/SVCD/VCD/CD/CD-R/CD-RW)
    MP3 support.
Coaxial digital and optical digital out. (DD/DTS/MPEG/PCM)
    192kHz/24-bit DAC
I'd like to get confirmation that it has true PAL --> NTSC conversion, and hope that it is a scalable progressive scan and supports RCE.
If so, it may be a better option than the Malata.

Is it available in North America (legally or otherwise)? If you really want it, you may have to order it from Europe or somewhere else and get a power converter. By the way, I recall that you live in Canada. Am I correct about this? Anyway, I know that Pioneer recently made the DV-535 region-free player, and J&R Music World (New York City) offered it on its web site. It wasn't cheap as I recall. I always thought the sale of region-free DVD players, including those that were manufactured that way at the factory as opposed to being clipped after-market, were illegal for sale in the US. You don't see too many being offered here. By contrast, region-free DVD players are advertised all over the place in the UK A/V magazines.

Yes, I'm in Canada, but I will be going to China next month. It seems the 533K there is around the price of the Malata here, although the Malata there is significantly cheaper than it is here.
If it supports the same features, I'd be more comfortable buying the Pioneer.
BTW, I am not sure about the legality, but I see region free players in Canada at local stores, although most seem to be off-brand players. And of course, the Malata was built that way right at the factory yet is available in both the US and Canada.

This player seems to be the Pioneer DV-444 elsewhere.
Same unit except for Karaoke, different number.
Any info on progressive mode scaling and PAL to NTSC conversion, especially in anamorphic mode?
