Pioneer DV-414 doesn't play - loud whirring noise (1 Viewer)

I've owned a Pioneer DV-414 for a few years now with no problems. For a while now, it keeps switching between playing just fine and having a real problem. Many times it will not load up a DVD, but simply spin the DVD faster and faster with a loud whirring noise. Sometimes the DVD will just stop or the display will go blank. Sometimes the player just ejects the DVD when it gives up.

I'm sure there is a perfectly reasonable solution. I am hoping I don't have to replace the player yet, as it may be a couple months before I can afford a new one. Thanks in advance for everyone's help.

Well, the 414 is a second-generation player, c. 1999. If you've been running the machine a lot (several movies back to back), it could very well be on its last legs. Or if you've been feeding it scratched and dirty discs, dirt has probably accumulated inside the machine (a major lifespan inhibitor). The solution could be as simple as cleaning the pickup lense or as dramatic as a complete replacement.

William: Sorry but IMO, you are probably looking at a terminal case. The new Pioneer 563 that everyone keeps buzzing about would be a good candidate for your 414's replacement. I had a 414 and it was a good player. But the new ones are better. Better picture, better sound (the 563 has SACD and DVD-Audio) and even better menus. Tough to beat for $175!
