I'm looking at the 444 mainly because of its ability to play back most of the different formats. According to reviews it has good video and audio quality but how does it compare to the Panasonic RP56 and Toshiba 4700? The 4700 looks like it can't play back VCD/SVCDs so it looks like that is out. RP56 can play back some at least.

UP! I'm trying to get this as a Christmas present so a quick answer would be appreciated. If it has good quality I'll get the 444. If not I'll get the Panny RP56.

The 444 looks cool that's for sure. I've always liked Pioneer DVD players, except they had a generation or two with audio problems, but as far as I know that's all fixed.

    Patrick,

Do a search for "First Impressions of Pioneer 444" and you should get my initial review of the player.

The only weak point of the 444 (I have it together with the RP-56) is it's "progressive scan", which is not, not having 3:2 pulldown detection.

Get 440 instead. I own one.

Same as 444 but no progressive out ( as another

poster mentioned, progressive on 444 sucks anyways)

    I paid $190 at Crutchfield
