I find this kind of sad as to me this is a film best left to vinegar syndrome in the bottom of the vault and not worth the time or effort to re-release it in any format. So many much more worthwhile films sit unreleased in Blu-ray. Sad.

Is it me or did this film make Paramount think dead young women = instant hit? At least that was the case with
Terms of Endearment*
and Forrest Gump (and Grease if you buy the "Sandy died and the whole movie is the last thing she hallucinates before ascending to heaven in a hot rod" fan theory).

*This and Love Story were double features on The Golden Girls in the Emmy-winning lesbian-themed episode "Isn't It Romantic"?

A few months ago, I purchased "Love Story" on iTunes when it was on sale for $4.99. Making an unexpected appearance for a second or two at the beginning of the iTunes version: a certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification in India dated 4/25/11 stating that "Love Story" is "fit for unrestricted public exhibition subject to excisions and modification listed in part II on the reverse." The certification was more entertaining than the film, which is as sappy as I remembered it. That said, it's an enjoyable time capsule for anyone familiar with Cambridge in the late 60s/early 70s.

This movie like The Heartbreak Kid shows you that winters were really winters in the early 70s.

I like the movie now more than when I originally saw it in a theater. I thought McGraw and O'Neal played well against each other. I'll agree the direction by Hiller was idiotic. An attempt at artsy fartsy and failing miserably. His decision to have Oliver go out and stare at a hockey rink at the end instead of reconciling with his Father as in the novel was just dumb and anticlimactic. I just try to ignore Francis Lai's overwrought sappy score. But like I said, I think the chemistry between O'Neal and McGraw works so I have the bluray. Besides, I like all the snow. As for buying this, if Paramount had put it on a 4k disc it would have been a no brainer for me. With all the new 4k Players hitting the market in the form of PS5's and XBoxX, you'd think they'd start doing this. I already have the previous bluray. Streaming in 4k? Isn't going to happen in my neighborhood with my crappy internet. Ebert gave it 4 stars so hey, there must be something there.

Has it not occurred to you that it might have that way in the screenplay, and that it wasn't his decision at all?

No film should EVER be left to vinegar syndrome.

Love Story is a favorite of mine. :) I will purchase the new disc if it reviews well. Caveat emptor regarding this Paramount series. Hoping for the best...

Hopefully this means a 4K release of Jonathan Livingston Seagull will be coming next from Paramount?
I'm not sure that will fly :D!

I suspect they are waiting on sales figures from the ViaVision Blu-ray?

Oh wow. ViaVision Blu? For a second there I thought you were messing with me cause that looks like a mock up of a blu-ray meets SelectaVision CED! That cost $39.95!
The wikiwebs say it was released in October 2020 and that was what the Google came up with. It also said that Warner Archives had offered an MOD-DVD ... I know I was one of the few who saw JLS via film projected on a HUGE screen in a near empty theatre the first Saturday after opening night  ...
