I'm pretty sure that saying "God Bless You" after someone sneezes goes back to the days when people believed that sneezing had something to do with the devil and saying "God Bless You" warded off evil spirits. Whatever.
If you're like me and work in an office with lots of people invariably one or more of your co-workers will have a cold. And during the day "sickboy" or "sickgirl" will sneeze over and over again. And sure enough after every sneeze like clockwork, comes the reply "GOD BLESS YOU" from all those around. Over and over again. Wouldn't one "God Bless You" be enough for the whole day? I know this sounds kind of Seinfeld-esque but does this bug anyone else??
P.S. Yes I've tried "Gezhundtite" (sp?) but even that gets tired after a while. [IMG]

Yeah, one "God bless you" is enough, especially from one person. Something I noticed in college was that hardly anybody said that when someone sneezed.

Speaking of sneezing, I feel awful from the constant sneezing I have endured today.

What I've heard, is that it comes from the belief that some ancient religon had they a sneeze was your soul trying to escape-saying God Bless You put it back. I'd imagine this is an urban myth, but who knows.

I never bless anyone when they sneeze. I see it as a mindless cultural habit and I have no reason to support it (regardless of how the custom originated). I couldn't imagine saying it fifty times a day.

When someone blesses me when I sneeze, I either ignore it or explain why I don't participate in the ritual.

Is it okay to bless someone when they sneeze in a public school... or could you get in trouble for that?
Thats why I say gesundheit. I think, in German, it literally translates to "healthy-ness". And krankheit means "sickness". Which brings me to the fact that the Germans must really laugh when they hear Walter Kronkite's name. (Walter Sickness?)

The proper way to "bless" those repeat sneezers is:
    1st sneeze "Bless you."
    2nd sneeze "Okaaaaaaaay!"
    3rd sneeze "Enough already!"
    4th sneeze "Just shut up!!"

I'm the kind of guy where one sneeze is never enough. My sneezes always come out in pairs. I never say "bless you" or "gesundheit" when someone around me sneezes...I just let it go completely ignored. But when someone says "bless you" when I sneeze I usually wheeze out a faint "thanks" but I really don't care if people don't say it. I really don't see the point.

Say "Prosit" next time, it's the Swedish version of "Bless you", although I think the word itself is arabic and means the same thing as "bless you". But at least it's something new.
I always say "Bless you" and I always expect it when I sneeze. Not for any purpose other than "that's how it is", just like saying "hello" or "goodbye".

There are four areas of sneezology that need to be covered:

For the classic two sneezes in a row for friends, I give a "bless" or mumble something that sounds like "god bless you"

For the classic two sneeze in a row for those I respect or don't know, I give a "bless you"

For multiple sneezers for friends, I give a "bless, bless, bless, bless" till it's done!

For multiple sneezes for those I respect or don't know, I give "jesus, you're crazy!"
