Kleine kubus met groot geluid

SVS is een Amerikaans merk van subwoofers dat alleen maar dat soort luidsprekers maakt en ze uitsluitend via het internet verkoopt. We hebben eerder al een cylindermodel van hen getest en de hemel in geprezen. Nu is een kubusvormige subwoofer aan de beurt: het kleinste model van SVS. Is die ook zo goed?

De meeste mensen werden pas echt geconfronteerd met een subwoofer bij de opkomst van de homecinemasystemen. Dat zijn echter vaker wel dan niet boemboxen en die zijn totaal ongeschikt voor bijvoorbeeld muziek. Nochtans kan een goeie subwoofer juist daar ook uitblinken. Om gewone luidsprekers echt diepe bassen te laten weergeven, moet je vooral grote boxen hebben. Daar kom je niet omheen. Bij lage frequenties hoort een zekere geluidsdruk en dus luchtverplaatsing. Dat gaat nu eenmaal alleen maar met een luidsprekerconus van een behoorlijke diameter. Minstens 25 à 30 cm, moet je dan denken. Hoe meer, hoe indrukwekkender het laag zal zijn. Het probleem is, dat niet iedereen de ruimte heeft om grote luidsprekerboxen neer te zetten. En dan is het des te erger dat je er normaal twee nodig hebt. Als we praten over een surroundinstallatie, kunnen het er zelfs vier of meer zijn. Bovendien heb je dan ook nog eens het nadeel dat een versterker ruim 95% of meer van zijn energie zal besteden aan het laag, terwijl de rest dient voor midden- en hoge tonen. Je kunt al deze problemen omzeilen door gebruik te maken van een goeie subwoofer.

Gescheiden laag
Wij hebben twee oren om de richting van een geluid te kunnen bepalen. Stereogehoor dus. Alleen is ons gehoor nauwelijks richtinggevoelig voor lage tonen. In feite kunnen we voor frequenties beneden pakweg 80 Hz steeds moeilijker de richting van het geluid bepalen. Deze handicap helpt ons vermijden dat we hele grote luidsprekers moeten kopen. We kunnen namelijk het laag afsplitsen van de rest. Als we de lage tonen beneden zo'n 80 Hz afsplitsen naar één apart luidsprekersysteem (de subwoofer), dan hoeven we voor de hoofdluidsprekers maar luidsprekers te kiezen die tonen kunnen weergeven tot net iets onder die 80 Hz. Als je weet dat zelfs zogenaamde boekenplankluidsprekers (dat zijn luidsprekers die vrij compact zijn en op een statief moeten om op oorhoogte te staan) van goede kwaliteit gemakkelijk frequenties tot zo'n 60 Hz betrouwbaar kunnen weergeven, dan snap je al dat de keuze van de hoofdluidsprekers heel wat makkelijker gemaakt wordt. Je hoeft immers geen grote boxen meer te zoeken, want het laag interesseert je niet meer vermits je dat overlaat aan een subwoofer. Zoek dus naar luidsprekers die goed zijn in het weergeven van hoge tonen, middentonen en hogere bassen tot zo'n 60 of 70 Hz. Dat mogen compacte statiefluidsprekers zijn, of moderne en slanke zuilen, keuze te over. Moeder de vrouw zal het ook appreciëren als je kunt toekomen met wat kleinere of slankere en dus schoner ogende luidsprekers. Het betekent ook dat je versterker niet zo krachtig hoeft te zijn. Met zogenaamde volledige-sprectrumluidsprekers (grote kasten die alle frequenties weergeven) moet een versterker immers meer dan 95% van zijn vermogen besteden aan de bassen en omdat dat zwaar werk is, vereist dat dus vooral véél vermogen. Als je een subwoofer gebruikt voor de laagste tonen, is er niet zoveel vermogen meer vereist voor de rest en kun je dus toekomen met een kleinere versterker. Zoals je merkt zijn er veel voordelen aan het gebruik van een subwoofer. De voornaamste kunst is dan ook, die subwoofer zo af te regelen op je hoofdluidsprekers dat je een naadloze overgang krijgt tussen die luidsprekers naarmate de lagere bassen bereikt worden en dat de algemene klankkleur daarbij niet of zo weinig mogelijk verandert.



Constructie
Op dit moment heeft SVS naast de drie basismodellen van hun cylindersubwoofers ook een heel gamma kubussen van klein naar groot. De hier besproken PB1-ISD is de kleinste, de grootste heet B4-Plus en bevat zomaar even vier luidsprekers! 'PB' staat overigens voor 'Powered Box' en dat betekent dat er een versterker ingebouwd zit: het gaat dus om een actieve subwoofer. Als er alleen een 'B' staat zit er geen versterker in en gaat het dus om een passieve subwoofer. Het cijfer daarna geeft het aantal luidsprekers aan dat ingebouwd is: van één tot vier stuks. Vervolgens komt een koppelteken en dan ofwel 'ISD', 'Plus' of 'Ultra' en dat geeft het soort luidspreker aan dat erin zit. De 'ISD' is de 'Improved Standard Driver' of "verbeterde standaardluidspreker" die voor SVS op maat vervaardigd werd en een conus van kevlar heeft. De Plus is een 'db12' luidspreker van TC-Sounds met een aluminium conus en de Ultra is een hoogvermogen luidspreker van dezelfde fabrikant en ook met een aluminium conus. De kubussen hebben een constructie die trillingen van de zware bassen zoveel mogelijk moet vermijden. Ze bestaan uit hogedensiteitsvezelplaten en voelen uitermate rigide aan. Als je er op klopt, hoor je geen galm - alleen maar je eigen knokkels op iets dat compleet dood lijkt. De afwerking verschilt naargelang het model, maar het gaat bij de PB1-ISD om een polyurethaanbekleding (een soort structuurverf) en standaard zwart is, maar in meerdere kleuren verkrijgbaar is. Net zoals de cylindermodellen straalt de luidspreker naar de vloer toe en daar heeft SVS een zware basisplaat gemonteerd zodat het geluid niet door je vloer weerkaatst moet worden, maar via de opening tussen de luidspreker en de basisplaat in je luisterruimte verspreid wordt. Zo heb je geen spikes nodig en krijg je ook perfecte subbassen op houten vloeren of tapijten. De PB1-ISD heeft één naar achteren gerichte poort en die is door SVS afgeregeld op 22 Hz. De PB1-ISD heeft de versterker ingebouwd die ook in de PCi-cylinderserie zit met een vermogen van 320 W.

Levering
Net zoals de vorige keer maakte SVS voor het vervoer naar Europa gebruik van de vervoersfirma Bax Global en die verzorgen het transport tot in de puntjes. De subwoofer die wij geleverd kregen, zat in een volmaakt onbeschadigde doos: zelfs geen deukje was te bekennen. Bax Global belt je bovendien als het toestel in ons land aangekomen is (doorgaans al binnen een paar dagen) om een levertijd af te spreken en ze houden zich daar ook aan. De mensen van SVS reageren prompt op e-mails en garanderen het toestel. Ze vervangen zonodig de luidspreker of desnoods de hele subwoofer als je niet tevreden bent, maar je draait wel op voor de transportkosten. We hebben wat andere mensen gecontacteerd via het internet die ook zo'n SVS subwoofer gekocht hadden en geen van hen had problemen met het vervoer ondervonden: iedereen kreeg het toestel in smetteloze toestand thuisgeleverd. Bij het openen van de doos blijkt de subwoofer in dikke schuimrubberen houders te zitten, zodat hij vrij ongevoelig is voor schokken tijdens het transport.



Afregeling
Nadat we de subwoofer uitgepakt hadden, hebben we die aangesloten op onze surroundinstallatie. Die bestaat uit een Sony STR-DB940 receiver van 5x 110 W, voorluidsprekers van Mission (m774 links en rechts, m5c in het midden) en achterluidsprekers van Eltax(Linear Response 6 Mk III). Je moet de subwoofer afregelen op je andere luidsprekers zodat hij even luid speelt en daarvoor heb je een decibelmeter nodig. Om de afregeling te doen, heb je testtonen nodig. De meeste 5.1-versterkers hebben die ingebouwd, maar je kunt ook speciale dvd's kopen om surroundsystemen mee af te regelen. Stel je versterker in zodat alle luidsprekers op 'small' staan (dus niet 'large'!) en zet hun afsnijfrequentie op 90 Hz. Sommige versterkers snijden 'small' af op 120 Hz en zo hoog reikt de SVS niet, dus dat moet je beslist bijregelen. Begin daarna met de testtoon voor de linkervoorluidspreker en regel het volume van je versterker totdat je decibelmeter 75 dB aangeeft vanaf je normale luisterzitplaats. Kies nu de andere luidsprekers en regel hun individuele versterking (blijf van het hoofdvolume af!) tot iedere luidspreker - inclusief de subwoofer - 75 dB naar buiten stuurt. Verder moet je instellen op welke afstand alle luidsprekers staan ten opzichte van je luisterplaats: zo kan de versterker een tijdvertraging instellen voor elke luidspreker zodat geluiden van alle luidsprekers je oren op hetzelfde ogenblik bereiken. Dat was het: nu is de afregeling compleet en kun je muziek en films weergeven. Integratie in een stereosysteem
Als je surroundversterker de subwooferuitgang alleen maar zou gebruiken voor het LFE-kanaal op dvd's (LFE = Low Frequency Effects of lage-frequentie-effecten) en dus zelf niet in staat is de lage tonen van je hoofdluidsprekers om te leiden naar je subwoofer, dan zul je daar zelf voor moeten zorgen. Dat geldt ook als je de subwoofer in een gewoon stereosysteem wil integreren, want een standaard stereoversterker zal meestal geen subwooferuitgang hebben. SVS heeft met dit soort gevallen rekening gehouden en biedt naast de low-level subwooferaansluiting ook nog een high-level luidsprekeraansluiting aan. Dat wil zeggen dat op de SVS in totaal acht luidsprekerconnectoren zitten: invoer en uitvoer voor telkens links en rechts, plus en min. Je sluit de luidsprekeruitgangen van je versterker niet op de luidsprekers aan maar op de ingangen van de SVS subwoofer.



De uitgangsaansluitingen van de SVS gaan dan naar je luidsprekers. Dat geeft de subwoofer de gelegenheid om zelf voor laagdoorlaatfilter te spelen en alle lage tonen af te zonderen voor zichzelf en alleen de hogere tonen naar je hoofdluidsprekers door te sturen. Je moet alleen de kantelfrequentie afregelen: dat is de frequentie waaronder de subwoofer alles voor zichzelf houdt. Je kunt op het gehoor of met behulp van een geluidsdrukmeter experimenteel vaststellen welke frequentie je daar het best voor gebruikt en hoe luid de subwoofer moet spelen. Hoe hoger je die frequentie kunt instellen, hoe makkelijker je hoofdluidsprekers het zullen hebben en hoe beter je midden- en hoge tonen zullen klinken: het gebruik van een subwoofer om het lage-tonenwerk over te nemen gedraagt zich immers net alsof je bi-amping had toegepast op het hoofdluidsprekers. Als je alles goed hebt ingesteld, zou je een glijdende toon moeten kunnen spelen vanaf pakweg 200 Hz omlaag naar 20 Hz: je luidsprekersysteem inclusief de afgeregelde subwoofer zou dit naadloos van begin tot einde moeten laten horen zonder dat je precies kunt zeggen waar de overgang zit tussen hoofdluidsprekers en waar de subwoofer het overneemt. Kun je dat wel, dan heb je het nog niet goed genoeg afgeregeld.

Prestaties
Inzake akoestische integratie kan de SVS PB1-ISD zich vrijwel meten met zijn grotere broers, op één puntje na. De PB1-ISD heeft immers geen continu regelbare fase: je kunt die met een schakelaar heen en weer schakelen tussen 0° en 180°, dat is alles. Of dat een handicap is, hangt af van waar je de subwoofer opstelt. Als je hem ofwel bij je hoofdluidsprekers opstelt ofwel achteraan in de luisterruime, dan heb je veelal genoeg aan de schakelaar. Stel je hem nog ergens anders op, dan zou een continue faseregeling wel voordelig kunnen zijn. Omdat wij hem naast onze rechtervoorluidspreker hadden opgesteld, kon de fase op 0° blijven staan. We hebben de prestaties van de subwoofer beoordeeld voor films en voor muziek. We hebben daarbij zowat alles wat we hadden liggen aan films en muziek (zie lijst onderaan dit artikel) op de SVS PB1-ISD losgelaten. Die bleek zo ongeveer het perfecte vermogen te hebben voor onze luisterruimte: we hadden de volumeregelaar uiteindelijk halfweg staan terwijl de subwooferuitgang van onze versterker gedempt was tot -5 dB om aan een geluidsdruk van 75 dB te geraken.



Films
Enigszins tot onze verrassing blijkt het door de PB1-ISD gecreërde geluidsbeeld vrijwel identiek te zijn aan dat van de eerder geteste cylindervormige 25-31PC-Plus. De ontploffingen van de dieptebommen in U571, het geweld van de balrog-demon en de vernietiging van de brug van Khazad Dûm in Lord of the Rings, het gedreun van tanks, schepen, vliegtuigen en ruimteschepen klinkt allemaal even indrukwekkend als bij de SVS 25-31PC-Plus. Dat wil trouwens wat zeggen, want dat was al het beste wat we ooit gehoord hadden in die prijsklasse en ver daarboven. Deze PB1-ISD doet dat voor nog minder geld dus nog eens over!

Muziek
Maar hoe zit het met de prestaties bij muziek, zeker als je de subwoofer de lage tonen wil doen overnemen van wat kleinere hoofdluidsprekers? We hebben bij de PB1-ISD daar bijzondere aandacht aan geschonken. De muzikaal beste subwoofer die we tot dusver gehoord hadden kwam van het Britse merk REL. Welnu, REL mag zijn borst natmaken want SVS biedt voor heel wat minder geld een subwoofer die het nog wat beter doet. Of de PB1-ISD het botte geweld van de laagste pedalen van een kerkorgel moet laten horen of het de subtiele lage tonen van een cello, hij draait er zijn hand bij wijze van spreken niet voor om. Zelfs de aartsmoeilijke contrabastonen in "Cold Cold Heart" van Norah Jones kwamen er precies door zoals een contrabas moet klinken. En als Diana Krall met haar stem wat dieper gaat, weet de PB1-ISD haar net dat ietsje meer volume en présence mee te geven. We hebben uiteraard de test met de basklarinet in "Diepe adem" op de instrumentale cd "Omzwervingen" van Willem Vermandere herhaald (met de hoofdluidsprekers uitgeschakeld moet de subwoofer vrijwel de volledige melodie dragen) en de PB1-ISD had daar evenals zijn grote broer geen enkele moeite mee. Ook de lage noten van de piano in de pianoconcerto's van Rachmaninov kregen net dat gewicht mee om je te doen geloven dat er een convertvleugel in je woonkamer staat te spelen. We hebben werkelijk geen enkele punt van kritiek. Wat we ook loslieten op de subwoofer, hij kweet zich geweldig van de taak. De vorige keer hebben de 25-31 PC-Plus een puntje afgetrokken voor muzikaliteit omdat hij de tonen rond de 50 à 60 Hz wat overdreef (dat hebben we overigens kunnen rechttrekken door twee van de drie poorten van die subwoofer te blokkeren), maar de PB1-ISD blijkt daar helemaal geen last van te hebben.

Conclusie
Deze kubus met zijden van bijna een halve meter doet de naam SVS alle eer aan. De klankkwaliteit blijkt perfect vergelijkbaar met die van de grotere cylindervormige broers. Voor niet al te groter ruimtes vind je absoluut niks dat beter gaat klinken voor deze prijs, behalve de SVS 25-31PCi die nog iets goedkoper is. Niet iedereen wil echter een cylinder in zijn woonkamer en dan is deze kubus ongetwijfeld de beste keuze. Ik ken geen producten die hier verkocht worden (of het nu Europese, Amerikaanse of Aziatische subwoofers zijn) die zelfs maar in de buurt komen van de SVS PB1-ISD.
