While out at lunch doing my pawn shop drive bys, I found The Army of Darkness limited edition directors cut #00940. I picked it up along with K-Pax, The Watcher, Disney Pinnochio and Coyote Ugly. All are in perfect condition, and I only paid $7 each.
Do any of you guys ever frequent these type of stores for DVD's?

You bet, all the time. Great way to find bargains. Criterions for $10, etc. Never gotten a score as nice as your AOD, but my best friend picked up a Spinal Tap (Criterion) in a pawn shop recently for like $12.

BTW, they also had a Criterion Chasing Amy, is this worthy of a $7 purchase?

    Thanks,
    Shane

Best Buy has Criterion Chasing Amy all the time for $14.99, with occasional sales to $12.99. So, I'd say that $7.00 is an even better deal.

The only pawn shop near me has a constant Internet connection with eBay always up on the screen. Needless to say all of their DVDs are priced too high and anything worth owning goes up on eBay. No chance of stumbling upon a treasure there.

Ummm... Have to mention this here... Found a nice little Criterion, spine #17, for $15... Ummmm, it was all I could do not to scream and faint when I saw this 'holy grail'... Ok, fine, so the movie is really pretty bad, but I can be a completist now if I want on my Criterions... Never underestimate the power of the pawnshops...

Sorry, I didn't realize that was the name of a movie, because I've never heard of it.

Here's some of my best "scores" over the last few years:
    Dead Ringers Criterion $10.00
Star Wars Trilogy SE LDBoxset $30.00 [IMG]
6 copies of Platoon when OOP [IMG] $135.00
(sold the Platoon dvds for over 100.00 each)
    Scarface Collector's Edition $10.00
Many, many, many Star Wars VHS Boxsets
    Armageddon Criterion $10.00
    LD player $29.99
Silence of the Lambs Criterion $10.00
I have NEVER found the Criterions of Salo or the Killer though, they're just too rare...

The best I've done is Passion of Joan of Arc, Criterion Silence of the Lambs, Criterion Robocop, Criterion For All Mankind, and Can't Stop the Music, all for $15 each. While CSTM may not sound like a great deal, I found it like a month before its release date. I also got Criterion Beastie Boys for $18, The Last Days of Disco for $10, and Sixteen Candles for $8. Oh, and I was thrilled with our last trip because I got the unedited Caligula for $12.

I don't go into the pawn shops around here often, but once I decided to drive to Santa Rosa to go thrift-shopping and by sheer luck ran into a pawn shop that wasn't even listed in the phone book, and found several SEALED CED videodiscs, including "Private School". Well, *I* thought it was a great find, so there! [IMG]

While the Salo is still the best deal I'll ever come across, I did get a few others very cheaply... I found the 3 disk Johnny Carson Collection (all 4 VHS shows, plus two other full programs) for $19.99, $10 for the 2 disk Jason Robards The Iceman Cometh, and the Ken Burn's Lewis and Clark for $12. All within the last 2 months. Gotta look long and hard sometimes, but it can all be worth it...[IMG]
