I was just watching my taped copy of the Passion of Joan of Arc off of TCM and it got me to wondering. IMDB lists running times of 88/110/114. The Criterion version of the film is 88 minutes (this is the version the show on TCM also) and is said to be close to Dreyer's original cut. What accounts form the almost 30 additional minutes listed in the other running times?

I believe the different times are due to variations in the FPS. In prior showings, the film was shown at reduced, incorrect speeds causing the elapsed time to increase by a large amount.

That was kind of my assumption. A similiar thing happened with Nosferatu which was usually show too fast (instead of too slow.)

I swear to God, that's what my reply said! I deleted it because I thought I'd made an error-other country's speed up, not slow down! I don't know what I was thinking (I forgot the differences in FPS projection for silent films).[IMG]
