What do J69 and OAR stand for? I have gathered that J69 somehow represents pan and scan, and OAR widescreen, but how, I do not know.

    Thanks for your time.

"J6P" is an ancronym for "Joe Six Pack," a derisive term in these parts for someone who isn't a film expert. Such a person, the derision goes, only cares about filling up his TV screen when watching a movie.

"OAR" is "original aspect ratio," which means the aspect ratio (a ratio comparing the width of a film's image to its height) in which the film was presented theatrically. This generally means "widescreen" for most theatrical films since the mid-50s.

I think the original use of J6P came when thinking about the um... "Trailer Park Trash" (excuse the term, couldn't think of anything better) who sit around drinking their 6 pack of beer and wanting their TV filled up because they are "ignorant" of the facts and just plain don't care.
These are people that even when taught what widescreen stands for don't care and will fight to the last breath to keep their TV's filled up... they don't care about art, or directors intent.
Hmmm, hope that helps clear things up [IMG]
    Chris.

Here's a new one for you. JI6P, Joe Imported Six Pack. He's the one with the new 16:9 HDTV and zooms 2.35:1 movies to 'get rid of those pesky black bars'.

And, in deference to sexual equality, there is also Ja6P or Jane Sixpack. Although I have to believe she is into wine coolers.

Joe Six Pack is not a fictitious person, he's real ...I think he was Mike Knapp's brother-in-law or alter ego, or he may have been one of his neighbors, I don't remember for sure.

If I remember correctly he (Mike Knapp) either coined the phrase and/or simply catapulted it into fame on Home Theater Forum.

This is not a joke! I'm totally serious!

Wasn't the term "Joe Six-Pack" first used publicly in a speech made by some congressman referring to the common person's reaction to some economic legislation that President Carter had proposed at a state-of-the-union address?

I have some vague recollection of this, but take it with a grain of salt.

I am not responsible for Joe Six Pack.

I am responsible for OAR however.

Where ever it came from - it's a term I wish members of this site would stop using.
