No more than Gunsmoke as a shot. It's FAR too many episodes and we're frankly lucky that both shows not only got full releases after so many long years of season and half season sets, we are blessed to have them repackages as complete cinderblock sized sets.

And also for a reasonable price. Thanks to you fans who stayed the course over the years, I was able to get Gunsmoke complete for $170.

Blu Ray releases of classic TV shows tend to fall more into cult favorites. Or shows with a manageable run. Magnum PI and Columbo were almost too long, but they got out there in HD. Mission: Impossible was a surprise also.

But, as I say, never say never. 13 years of Bonanza is still shorter than 20 years of Gunsmoke. I'd be behind it, along with classic Hawaii Five-0, which looks great on Paramount + in HD.

I was one of those fans who paid full price for every Gunsmoke release as they came out. I mostly did it for myself, hoping that CBS would stay the course and eventually release all 20 seasons. Glad to hear it helped other fans as well. ;)

Bonanza was 14 seasons, although the final season was more like half a season with fewer episodes.

Although, Paramount was able to release the entire Cheers series on BD.
I think that could be because Cheers was a comedy, and not an hour drama like Gunsmoke and Bonanza (although of course Gunsmoke was a half-hour affair for the first 6 seasons).

How much of an upgrade would there really be if Bonanza and Gunsmoke went to blu ray? Presumably the blue rays would be made from the same masters that the he dvds were made from.

The same masters as this recent Complete box set, but probably better than the masters used for the individual seasons which is what I currently own.

Ditto!
Still , a Blu-ray release would be great. I’d even settle for an Adam Years package!

Indeed-- that second-season, first-volume original release (IIRC) was said to have utterly horrible picture quality.

I've watched the first 13 episodes and I'm sold! The cast has a good chemistry. It's interesting to see a western centered on a family after watching mostly Gunsmoke, Have Gun - Will Travel, Rawhide, and Maverick. The color is also beautiful! The episodes look great! Excellent remastering! And while the stories aren't as great as Gunsmoke or Have Gun, they aren't as bad as Laramie; they are solid! I'm happy with getting the complete series box set and look forward to going through 400 plus more episodes :)

Roberts with stunt woman, Evelyn Finley.
She was an excellent horsewoman who often double for me.

I watched the first season. It was very entertaining! The show got much better when it stopped trying to integrate historical figures into every show.

By the end of the season, all the characters seemed to be well defined, except perhaps for Adam, he's still a bit of an enigma. Adam didn't seem to contribute as much during this first season as the other characters, Ben, Hoss and Little Jo.

I'm really happy with the complete series purchase! The transfers are gorgeous!! To see TV guest stars of that area in color is really a treat!!

Listing on Amazon’s German site

$42.53 USD plus shipping
That price is phenomenal for what you get. The same company released The Virginian on Blu-Ray and it looked great.

I have to say this is very disheartening for someone that bought the complete DVD series. I guess I could sell on E-Bay for and use the money toward the first two seasons.

I've been watching the complete series DVD set. I'm in season 2. The picture quality for season 2 doesn't seem to be as high as it was for season 1. You can tell work has been done on season 2, it's an HD scan, but it doesn't seem to be as nice of an HD scan as season 1 was. Season 2 just looks a little soft, not as clear.

The original season 2 set did not use proper restoration for its prints, so, if you have that one, the difference will most probably be very striking.

A non-volume, all in one release of Season 2 came out around the time the complete series dropped and that one has properly restored episodes and all.

I have the original (2011) and new (2023) remastering from vault 35mm sets of Bonanza season two and the difference is night and day! Those remastered files for season two are included in the massive complete series box set.

In 2011, CBS/P was operating with a budget cut and cheaped out by not doing new scans and transfers for Bonanza season two. That was the same year that they gave us the dreadful old files for Rawhide season four, which they have regretfully not yet seen fit to correct with new HD scans and up-to-date transfers.

I had to buy the improved Bonanza season two set as I had every other season release of that series up to season 10 already, and I thought it wasteful for me to buy the huge complete series set. And I also prefer the season sets over those mega-packs with overlapping discs anyway. I've since purchased seasons 11 to 13 in the CBS/P sets. I only need to buy the final season 14 and I'll have the whole works. I need to do that while it's still available.
