Paramount didn't restore the original VV negs, because they are too faded and couldn't make a new IP from these elements for a transfer. From what I understand, the two 1970's CRI are the best elements they have to work with, and a studio dye transfer 35mm print. This is what was used for the WS laserdisc and TV showings from 1994 on.

Also, Brando (or Brando Estate) owns the story rights to this film as well.

Sounds a lot like the issues with "North By Northwest" and look at the excelent DVD that was created for that title.

With the magic of digital processing, hidef scanners, and an IB Tech print to use for color reference, I'm pretty sure that Lowrey could make a pretty decent HD master for video if they were paid to do so by Paramount.

It wouldn't be cheap, but as time passes, the elements continue to degrade.
