I need help choosing between these two players. I can buy the Oppo new, or the Panny used 7 months for slightly less, but price difference is not an issue.

I plan to hook up HDMI directly to a Toshiba HD ready tv. Audio will be COAX to my receiver.

I know they're both well reviewed and I've read the Secrets shootout. I also see that the Panny has a higher score. But I still think the Oppo might be better since it's new and the Panny has been in the market for 2? years?

I'm not 100% sure I'll make use of 6ch SACD with the Oppo, but I'll definitely be trying it and that's what's leading me that way.

    Can anyone make a recommendation?

The Oppo would be NEW with a warranty. It even comes with an HDMI cable. Once you have experienced a good SACD recording you'll be hooked.

If you don't need SACD, you might consider the 971H even. As a stand alone player, it is actually a better upconverting player from what I understand.

The 971 does have better deinterlacing and scaling with Faroudja (however, both players share same MPEG decoder). However, macroblocking is a possibility with the 971 and it may have a bit softer image (depending on the display/output).

The 970 will be a bit sharper, but with somewhat less "finesse." Macroblocking no issue here.

Rumor is a new Oppo with better performance than either model is coming by the end of the year.

While I've used both Oppos, I haven't used the Panasonic S series. However, I'd be more inclined to go with the 970 especially if what you watch are mostly film-based DVDs.

WOW! Thank you for that unanimous response. The s77 is officially ruled out of my selection.

Now I just have to decide between the 970 and Oppo's newest player coming out this fall. I think I might jump on the 970 knowing that that new Oppo will be priced above the 971, but you never know...

You could buy the 970 and sell it. Oppos sell fast.

Also, keep in mind this new Oppo will likely be priced higher than the current models.

You guys think that the oppo HD971 looks better at 1080i than the Samsung HD960 does at 1080p?

    If so why is that?
