Panny 53WX42 - shouldn't this upconvert 720p to 1080i? (1 Viewer)

I tried to play Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 on my XBox last night in 720p mode, believing that the signal would be upconverted to 1080i on my TV. Instead, I just got a blank screen. Does this mean if I buy an OTA HD receiver that I won't be able to watch any 720p broadcasts?

Greetings

The tV does not accept 720P ... it never has.

720P is handled from the STB and converted to 1080i unless you tell the stb to keep everything native.

Are there any other methods to upconvert an xbox signal to 1080? Perhaps running it through a STB? Just curious cause i'm about to get the pioneer sd533hd5 and i know it doesn't accept 720p. Wondering if this will be a really big negative for me.

Just need a box to do it outside the tv.

Some tv's do it too.

720P converted to 1080i looks ok... Nothing to complain about.

720P is better for sports. 1080i is better for still motion.

Why XBOX doesn't do 540p instead of (or in addition to) 720p is beyond me. Any 1080i set will accept a 540p signal, but sets that will accept 720p are certainly not commonplace.

This is news to me...and strikes the Panny off of my shopping list! Which of the following *will* accept the Xbox 720p signal?

Hitachi SWX?
Toshiba HDX?

Thanks!

The Toshiba will, but it won't keep it native. It'll bump it up to 1080i i believe.
...okay, So the Panny will give me nothing when my Xbox is set to 720p, but the Tosh will upscale that to 1080i...how about the Hitachi?

Many thanks in advance!

actually down. higher number but lower resolution.
Oh oh...here we go! :)
Even in the worse case scenario, 1080i will never look lower in resolution than 540p. Now do the math:
1920x540 = 1036800
1280x720 = 921600
If you want to argue temporal resolution, that's a subject for another day.

Greetings

Temporal resolution ... 1920 x 1080 = 2,073,600 visible pixels of information.

Sure it may be interlaced, but the brain sees it as being all there at all times and that is all that matters.

I have a Sony SAT-HD200 and was wondering if I can hook up my Xbox to it to get 720 on a Panny 53wx42 TV?

I don't see any inputs to hook up the xbox to. Do I need something else?

Thanks,

Sam.

All HD ready sets with no built in HD decoder that only accept 1080i will not convert 720p to 1080i..THe HD set top box is what does the conversion before reaching the set...This includes just all HD ready sets like Tosh, mits, panasonic ETC...

It was my understanding is that the Toshiba will display 720p signals and 1080i signals natively (no upconversion). The Toshibas only upconvert 480i or 480p to 540p.
Is this correct or am I missing something?
