I thought I read a year or so ago that this classic film was coming to DCD.
Anyone have any news?
Are you referring to the Silent? If so, I have had it for a long time. Check my DVD Prolife.
That'll be the movie.
It's not listed on Amazon now tho.
The version Jeff has is the UK release (R0/PAL), which can be had cheaply these days.
It has also been released in Australia (R4/PAL), and I think it's also out in France (and possibly in Germany).
As for Region 1, Pandora's Box has been on Criterion's slate for quite some time, but I think they're waiting for a restoration to be completed. From the 2001 Criterion HTF Chat:
Thanks for the research Brian.
I had Diary of a Lost Girl, but it was defective, and I had to return it.
Sounds like a Region 1 Pandora is lost for now, too.
It's hard to believe it's been so long since I asked that question, but I'm still waiting patiently.
Mine was too. But I was able to get mine replaced. I tend to have more problems with Kino than any other label. The Leather Boys and The Fritz Lang Epic Collection also needed to be replaced, usually it is due to the discs getting scratched in the poorly designed cases they sometimes use.
I too had defect problems with the Kino release of Diary of a Lost Girl but had mine replaced and it works fine now.
I purchased Pandora's Box (PAL) in London two years ago and after a long, arduous slog, managed to get myself a VHS copy of the DVD for my personal use so I could watch it (I had a friend with a region-bypass player).
The transfer on the DVD is terrible (I'm not just talking lack of restoration, but artifacting and misframing all over the place), and it's a shame I don't technically have the DVD, but the 'Looking for Lulu' documentary is amazing.
I realize that Criterion asked us to not hold our breath, but I am very anxious to see this DVD in the next five-ten years hopefully.
