As I look for an HDTV, someone mentioned the signal strength is different than conventional television signals. The store guru said the signal is much weaker and doesn't travel as far. Any truth to the information?

    Yes and no

With an analog signal, you can recieve something pretty far away. With digital it's all or nothing. Either you get a perfect picture or you get a blank (maybe just garbled) screen. So the distance to get a decently resolved picture is about the same, but you could definately see some sort of picture a lot farther out on analog (whether or not you want to watch said picture is another question)

You may want to check out http://www.antennaweb.org . Others have found it helpful because you can enter your address and it will give you a list of stations and their relative signal strength.
