Remember you're voting for the year where the Oscars did a better job, not for the films of a year in general.

I'll abstain, I've seen too unfair a number of 1933 films versus only one from 1949.

Chain gang is better than heiress, which in turn is better than most of the other films from 33.

1933 wins. I've seen all of the 49 movies and almost all of the 33 films, and am impressed with neither slate, but would probably go for 1933 despite the lack of films like Duck Soup.

Next,

1968 vs. 2003

1968:
Oliver!
Funny Girl
The Lion in Winter
Rachel, Rachel
Romeo and Juliet

2003:
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Lost in Translation
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
Mystic River
Seabiscuit

68

I'veo only seen 2 of the 68 films, but 2003 was an awful Oscar year; rewarding a collection of good-ok films with perhaps only Master & Commander retaining enough outstanding qualities to deserve a spot.

The Lion in Winter beats them all.

(of course my vote might be different had I seen any of the other 3 films from '68. I cringe at the thought of Funny Girl and can't see myself enjoying Rachel, Rachel either (assuming it doesn't involve a young girl's erotic journey from Milan to Minsk).

Lion in Winter Beats them all, but overall, oscar got it more right in 2003, with all excellent films.

1968:

Funny Girl - sort of ok
The Lion in Winter - good
Rachel, Rachel - good

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - good
Lost in Translation - I was under-whelmed
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World - good
Mystic River - very good

2003 wins (that would have been my vote. Not only did 2003 get the right winner, 1968 gave the best picture to Oliver! and didn't even nominate many, many films, far better than Oliver - 2001, Planet of the Apes, The Odd Couple, Rosemary's Baby, Yellow Submarine, The Producers, etc., etc.). It didn't need my vote, but that would have been an easy tie-breaker for me.

Next,

1943 vs. 1978

1943:
Casablanca
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Heaven Can Wait
The Human Comedy
In Which We Serve
Madame Curie
The More the Merrier
The Ox-Bow Incident
The Song of Bernadette
Watch on the Rhine

1978:
The Deer Hunter
Coming Home
Heaven Can Wait
Midnight Express
An Unmarried Woman

And welcome back Rain, despite your vote. :) :)

Welcome back Rain!

1943

I've seen 3 films from each - The Deer Hunter and Coming Home are both very fine films, and Midnight Express is good-ok. But they can't match Casablanca, The Ox-Bow Incident, and Heaven Can Wait.
