I've been a big fan of Mail.app since October. I can't wait to try iCal.
But Final Cut Pro is way too much for what I need. Still, I've done some fun things with it. I can't talk about them here, though.Porn.
j/k Steve! Nice to see you on the forum, I guess we keep different hours. I was just thinking the other day how much I still miss The DVD Resource Page... if you're not sick of hearing that by now!
IHMO:
iCal: Cool, but needs a 2.0 to be "awesome."
Mail: Much improved. Perfect for my needs.
.Mac: Better than I thought; glad I parted with the $49.
iPhoto: Needs some improvement, but still pretty good.
iChat: Not for me.
iTunes: Great! And I love my 20Gb iPod!

I have looked for alternative software packages for OSX, and there is nothing of quality out there. Only one package exists with online lookup (UPC numbers), but it is a large "pile." DVD Profiler is still the definitive DVD cataloging software.I have been using ReaderWare on OS X for quite a while now and couldn't disagree more. ReaderWare is the greatest thing since sliced bread. It downloads everything from cover art to cast & crew credits. When I buy something I can't wait to get home and scan in the barcodes.
ReaderWare not only catalogs my DVDs, but my Audio CDs and books as well, which are in even greater need of being cataloged. (And it will do other video formats as well for you Laser Disk guys.) R2/3/4 DVDs are a snap as well as you can just drag in an IMDB url and ReaderWare will get you all the info, just as with an R1 barcode.
The other thing that is notable it the quality of customer support -- I have e-mailed about problems in the middle of the night on a holiday weekend, and got an answer/fix before I woke up the next morning.
Really, I can't think of a single other 3rd party OS X developer that I like as much as ReaderWare.

Sometimes I miss my Power Macintosh Resource Page more.
As for the bundled applications...
iCal: Shows potential...cool, yes.
Mail: I am using Entourage, but it has some performance quirks under 10.2. That may prompt me to go to Mail.
.Mac: At $49 with 100 free Kodak prints, it's a no-brainer. I wonder how many of us will renew next year when the price is $100?
iPhoto: Have not used much...for browsing photos, GraphicConverter is great.
iChat: Better than I expected...and I'm amazed that my old AIM handle is still registered, even though I dumped AOL years ago.
iTunes: I have 30 gigs of an 80 gig firewire drive occupied with my iTunes library. I love being able to catalog and organize my music collection. For example, I have the Time/Life Sounds of the Seventies. It was impossible to find a song when having to go through 36 CD's, but rip them and put them into a playlist in iTunes, and it's an instant computer-controlled 70's jukebox.
iPod: Alas, I only have the 10-gig version. Hmmm...I might have to upgrade!

1) DVD Profiler (And my bar code reader that is a PS/2 port)Tom, I hear ya. However, being that you're using DVD Profiler, and not running a graphics-intensive game like Quake or something, you should try Virtual PC if you haven't already. It works slower obviously, but since it's just pulling data, and entering some bar code info manually, it does the job quite nicely.
Now I have to add 3) Upgrading/Hacking my TiVo.
I do quite a bit of hacking on the ol' DTivo, and there's simply no way to do this on the Mac. :frowning:
To not fly compleltey off topic, I haven't upgraded to 10.2 yet, and would like to, but I'm a bit too lazy to restart from scratch. I hear that you can no finally do a clean install, but that people recommend a format and clean wipe to avoid any potential issues.
Funny, I never even considered iCal as a viable feature I'd use, but I'd definitely use it for DVD related news.
P.S. I'd love a Mac section here at the HTF.
