Wow, I never knew iCal could do that...

Just got 10.2 and it works well on my B/W G3 350, but I too am annoyed that Toast stopped working with my SCSI burner. I'm really trying to stay out of 9.2, but this doesn't help. I hope they get a patch out soon. I installed 10.2 on my wife's iBook 500 and I think something went wrong in the install--I still get the happy mac at startup, but there's also the new spinning wheel thingy below it with a box around it. Weird. The Finder says 10.2 and everything seems to work...anyone ever heard of this? I'm about to reinstall, so hopefully that'll take care of it.

You still get the happy Mac? That's very odd...the happy Mac is supposed to be replaced by a grey Apple.
Backtracking a bit, yes, iCal with the DVD Release Schedule is cool. It would be nice if it were a more complete listing, however.
I've been running 10.2 on everything but my 68K Performa, which I still use under 8.1 as an X10 server. I even got 10.2 to work on my old PowerMac 7500 with the G3/400 upgrade. It took voodoo, though!
I recently replaced my 2001 Quicksilver/867 with a 2002 Quicksilver/Dual 1G. The render times in Final Cut Pro are vastly improved. I was going to get one of the new Mirrored Drive Doors G4 towers, but stuck with the Quicksilver architecture when the MDD benchmarks showed no speed improvements over the Quicksilvers. The upside was that I got to reuse my RAM. Woo hoo!
The lack of 16x9 support and the 90-minute hard-limit in iDVD was enough to make me upgrade to DVD Studio Pro. But Final Cut Pro is way too much for what I need. Still, I've done some fun things with it.
I can't talk about them here, though. :)

Yep, I still get happy Mac AND the new startup spinning cursor (the one that looks like a gear) on the iBook...but my G3 b/w shows the grey apple logo...go figure.

John,
I suggest backing up your data on the iBook, and reformatting the disk. Sounds like the BootX file is screwed up, and unless you fix it, it's sure to go nuts at the worse possible time. Becuase computers know when that time is...

Porn. ;)
j/k Steve! Nice to see you on the forum, I guess we keep different hours. I was just thinking the other day how much I still miss The DVD Resource Page... if you're not sick of hearing that by now!
IHMO:
iCal: Cool, but needs a 2.0 to be "awesome."
Mail: Much improved. Perfect for my needs.
.Mac: Better than I thought; glad I parted with the $49.
iPhoto: Needs some improvement, but still pretty good.
iChat: Not for me.
iTunes: Great! And I love my 20Gb iPod!

As iCal uses the industry-standard iCalendar format, conceivably a website could publish full release dates that would be available to any user, be they Mac, Windows, Linux, etc. I think having this type of listing is a great idea and that the Online DVD stores should look into doing and could be integrated with a company's database.

10.2 rocks on my PowerBook, and I can't wait for the Houston Apple retail store to open so we can get my wife a new iMac.

can mail be networked, as in I'd like to access my mail from any terminal but have all folders in one spot.

ps. I noticed iCal is memory hungry (filemaker slows down) - is 768MB enough for 10.2?

what's the max RAM on an iMac 800?

thanks.

didn't know we had quite a few Mac lovers here; enough to start a forum Ron?

I've gotten iTunes to network, so I see no reason why Mail can't be set up.

I have looked for alternative software packages for OSX, and there is nothing of quality out there. Only one package exists with online lookup (UPC numbers), but it is a large "pile." DVD Profiler is still the definitive DVD cataloging software.
I have been using ReaderWare on OS X for quite a while now and couldn't disagree more. ReaderWare is the greatest thing since sliced bread. It downloads everything from cover art to cast & crew credits. When I buy something I can't wait to get home and scan in the barcodes.

ReaderWare not only catalogs my DVDs, but my Audio CDs and books as well, which are in even greater need of being cataloged. (And it will do other video formats as well for you Laser Disk guys.) R2/3/4 DVDs are a snap as well as you can just drag in an IMDB url and ReaderWare will get you all the info, just as with an R1 barcode.

The other thing that is notable it the quality of customer support -- I have e-mailed about problems in the middle of the night on a holiday weekend, and got an answer/fix before I woke up the next morning.

Really, I can't think of a single other 3rd party OS X developer that I like as much as ReaderWare.

dude,

I NEED to network iTunes - how so?

so now I can dump Outlook express!?

Readerware sounds cool, I just got a barcode scanner.

ps. has anyone had short (2 hours) iPod 5GB battery life issues? is there a fix? I have a habit of skipping tracks (surfing?)

the Dr. Bott Car charger makes unbearable interference noise when engine's on.

thinking of 20GB model as well.

I was just thinking the other day how much I still miss The DVD Resource Page... if you're not sick of hearing that by now!
Sometimes I miss my Power Macintosh Resource Page more.
As for the bundled applications...
iCal: Shows potential...cool, yes.
Mail: I am using Entourage, but it has some performance quirks under 10.2. That may prompt me to go to Mail.
.Mac: At $49 with 100 free Kodak prints, it's a no-brainer. I wonder how many of us will renew next year when the price is $100?
iPhoto: Have not used much...for browsing photos, GraphicConverter is great.
iChat: Better than I expected...and I'm amazed that my old AIM handle is still registered, even though I dumped AOL years ago.
iTunes: I have 30 gigs of an 80 gig firewire drive occupied with my iTunes library. I love being able to catalog and organize my music collection. For example, I have the Time/Life Sounds of the Seventies. It was impossible to find a song when having to go through 36 CD's, but rip them and put them into a playlist in iTunes, and it's an instant computer-controlled 70's jukebox.
iPod: Alas, I only have the 10-gig version. Hmmm...I might have to upgrade! :D

Re: Networking iTunes
I did a variation of the procedure covered in MacWorld:
http://www.macworld.com/newsletters/archive/051302.html
The files are named a little differently with iTunes 3. Let's say you want to network your iTunes 3 library from your desktop Mac to your PowerBook.
You mount the desktop drive containing your iTunes music on your PowerBook. (Go menu, Connect to server, etc...)
On your PowerBook, find your original iTunes 3 Music Library and iTunes Music Library.xml files. They should be under Users->your username->Music->iTunes. Back these files up somewhere.
Overwrite these files with the files of the same name from the desktop Mac.
Bring up iTunes on the PowerBook. Your desktop Mac's library will now appear on the PowerBook. Click and music will play!
Score bonus points for doing this wirelessly over Airport. :D

Readerware needs to be ported to Cocoa, the Java implementation is slow and rough around the edges. I think the software certainly has potential, but it needs a native version and a bit more attention to detail. I'll stick with DVD Profiler on my PC until something equally good makes an appearance on OS X. :D

Apple is also working on a Rendezvous implentation of iTunes which will automatically add a shared playlist of a computer on your network to the computer you want to play it on. Look for the new feature in iTunes by the end of the year.

Yep, there are two things keeping a Windows based computer in my house

1) DVD Profiler (And my bar code reader that is a PS/2 port)

2) Microsoft Money. I have quicken, I've tried to convert, and it crashes when I import QIF files. go figure.

Tom, I hear ya. However, being that you're using DVD Profiler, and not running a graphics-intensive game like Quake or something, you should try Virtual PC if you haven't already. It works slower obviously, but since it's just pulling data, and entering some bar code info manually, it does the job quite nicely.
Now I have to add 3) Upgrading/Hacking my TiVo.
I do quite a bit of hacking on the ol' DTivo, and there's simply no way to do this on the Mac. :frowning:
To not fly compleltey off topic, I haven't upgraded to 10.2 yet, and would like to, but I'm a bit too lazy to restart from scratch. I hear that you can no finally do a clean install, but that people recommend a format and clean wipe to avoid any potential issues.
Funny, I never even considered iCal as a viable feature I'd use, but I'd definitely use it for DVD related news.
P.S. I'd love a Mac section here at the HTF. :emoji_thumbsup: :D

I dislike DVD Profiler. The database got screwed up 1 too many on me. I have about 1,200 DVD that were archived, and I scanned a lot of my own covers. I have yet to try version 2. So it might be better....

Speaking of databses, I use Mac for email because it has less problems with virus and other trojan baddies. I like Outlook Express and Entourage, but the database file get corrupt on me too much as well. I got fed up with it, I lost about 300MB worth of archived email. So that's email from about 1991-1998. I saved my 1998/99 and up, some of my old 1992-1995 because most of those I dumped to text files. So I'm sticking to PINE and Eudora!
