I thought - could be mistaken - that the showrunners said that they intended to go five seasons to tell the story they had in mind. I would imagine that her contract with Orphan Black would take precedence over any other potential projects since they had her first. But their seasons are only ten episodes, so I'm guessing that the shooting period is relatively short. But I'd be shocked if she wasn't locked into a multi-season contract there.

There's always the "standard" five year contract, which seems to be mentioned unofficially for some tv actors playing lead roles. (Though I have never seen the actual paperwork).


As a recent example, there's the case of Haven which was renewed for season 5 with 26 episodes. Previous seasons only had 13 episodes.

If I had to guess, it sounds like Syfy trying to squeeze out another season, without having to renegotiate contracts for a "season 6".



I suspect the other big issue about show renewals/cancelations, is what the costs are and who exactly is paying for the costs and at what time.


ie. Does the original production company pay most of the costs upfront? Or does the tv/cable/streaming network pay most of the costs upfront? etc .....
