"Man In A Steel Frame" seems more like a early Five 0 episode. That's why I mentioned the writer was involved in the show back then. We heard less and less about the Five 0 men's personal lives as the show went on. Here is the other Cathy's in Steve's life.

Fun fact: Jonathan Goldsmith, aka “The Most Interesting Man in the World”, and who also appeared in season 1, played the creepy shooter Malcolm Vaughn in this episode. Another reason why I love this one so much! I loved watching McGarrett beat the tar out of him in the surf at the end.

    914 “Ready, Aim”

In my opinion one of the things Five-0 did in the earlier seasons to make the episodes better was simply spend a minute or two at the beginning of a show to develop the guest star a little bit, making them likeable or at least relatable. The later seasons don’t employ this technique as much. This episode is a nice example of where the guest star's character development occurs throughout the episode, so by the end, I was fully engaged. Hopefully more episodes will do the development earlier, but if not, better late than never. :)

I think that's why the second-season episode called "The Singapore File" (OAD 11/19/69 on CBS) is one of my favorites: for just such the reason you stated.

I enjoy good guest star development too. I'll risk sounding sexist, but I don't think there were too many good female guest actresses cast in the mid to late 70's. I was watching another season 9 episode, "To Kill a Mind". The actress, Laura Campbell, hired to play a Dr. whose brother is kidnapped is just terrible. Stiff and emotionless. Hard to care for her at all. For me, poor casting weakens many of the last three seasons. I realized the better shows are with stronger actors. The writing gets weaker as well, but good actors can elevate poor material.

It's not just Hawaii Five-0 that the acting talent seems weaker. I noticed the same thing with many of the QM shows. I understand you can't get Vera Miles every week, but there had to be better women around in the late 70's.

915 “Elegy in a Rain Forest”

Who knew Manicote had such gumption. I liked it.

    915a.JPG

Who knew Duke could kick ass? I like it a lot.

    915b'.JPG

Loved the “David” character and especially his talisman of civilization.

Dare I ask if we shall see him again? I hope so. But think not.

She makes ST:TNG season two almost unwatchable for me.

On a more serious note...recently received some of these later seasons of Five-0 as a gift, and am reading Alan's and the rest of you guys' feedback with avid interest, to help me determine if the last few years of the show are worth watching. Loving the screen grabs!

Oh, you have NO idea how much I agree.

Though, oddly, I just watched the McCloud pilot last night and she featured in it heavily...and, somewhat surprisingly, I didn't reflexively recoil in horror. She was OK.

Not trying to be mean...I'm sure she must have her fans - I've just never counted myself among them. Most of us have actors or actresses that we don't take to. Ms. Muldaur and Bea Arthur are two of my bete noires.

I had no idea she had so many detractors. Maybe she'll help me chase them off!

The late Andy Griffith is one of mine (The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock notwithstanding), and so is the late Gary Coleman (I don't know about you, but I never thought Diff'rent Strokes was funny, let alone the various Very Special Episodes within [IINM]).

    916 “Dealer’s Choice…Blackmail”

John Ritter is Officer Wells’s brother? I love it.

    916.JPG

This was a fun episode. The Ritter character was by turns an addict and a very smart guy. It made me like Sandy even more. Another season nine standout.

I even saw John Ritter in that second-season episode of Petrocelli called "Chain of Command," OAD Oct. 8, 1975 on NBC (he was John Oleson there, a scoutmaster accused of the murder of a general); he was excellent in that as well. Oddly enough, I still haven't gotten much into his classic Three's Company ABC comedy.

My problem with THREE'S COMPANY, as it is with virtually every sitcom like it, is that I don't like feeling manipulated into a fake laugh every seven seconds.

I've never cared for Three's Company either, but the British original it was based on, Man About the House, is a fun show. But then again, I much prefer British comedies to U.S. ones., as a general rule. I have liked John Ritter in other things. He's especially good in Sling Blade.

It seems like many modern sitcoms follow this laugh-machine formula. I prefer comedies in which the humor is more character-based. And even then, very few comedies would crack my top 20 TV shows of all time list. But that's just me.

We now return to our regularly scheduled program, Hawaii Five-0. Not a show noted for its humor - and that's not a complaint!

I think that when Alan gets there, his comments on that final season's worth will be similar to those of Mike Quigley (I might be incorrect, though; Alan might like it).

Season 9 of H50 is a far, far better season than 8. One of my favorites of the entire run.
