Whats the deal with the optical out on recievers? Is this for like recording or something?

Yes, for a CD-Recorder, for instance. No reason to pass a digital signal through analog cables.

Yep, I use my optical out to record to my minidisc deck. My receiver actually has optical and coax outputs. Haven't need the coax out yet but it's nice to have just in case.
