I have both otical and coaxial digital audio connections between my DVD player and my receiver. When playing on optical, the audio would cut off and on constantly, and the receiver would lock and unlock accordingly. I assume that somethings up witht he optical cable or connection. I switched to coaxial and all was ok.

I would tend to agree. It sounds like your optical cable may be damaged in some way. Or maybe there is some dust on the connection lens.

Like, 4 years ago, when I set up my first DVD palyer optically, I didn't know that there were little plastic caps on the tips. I tried jamming the cable in, and it would lose the signal intermittently. (Duh)
