When we were in LA we had the pleasure of being able to meet Joe Kane and have him give us a very detailed talk on setting up a projection system and this included setting up a proper grey scale.
He temporarily showed us a very cool device called the TVS Pro from Visual Standard and can be read about http://www.avstandards.com/

I, too, would love to know the cost of this comparator. Would love to do a full grayscale calibration on my set!

    Cost is still $895.
I think it's time for me to get off my butt and build my own comparator. This device should cost $200-$300 max including calibration.
If the correct color temperature can be consistently presented by the light source, then a good photographer's light meter could be used to calibrate the low-level/high-level/IRE settings.

I didn't post the price because I figured you would want to go to the site and read up on it first. The price they have listed is $895.

    Greetings,
The TVS Pro is the most convenient comparator out there and it is also extremely accurate. I have been using one for over a year now and I find that with a trained eye one can get the grey scale dead on - of course I also use a color analyzer.
    Thanks,
