Brad here. After years of buying Sony Blu-ray players, I'm looking to buy this Oppo 203 as my Christmas present to myself.
Only have 1 4K TV in the house (bedroom 50" Vizio M Series) so that's where this new Oppo would go until I replace my current Vizio E-Series 70 (vintage 2013), probably with the 70" Vizio M Series (4K, HDR10, DolbyVision). I'd go for the 75" P Series if money allows but I get the feeling that I'll have to step down a bit (taking the wife on another cruise in 2018). Once that new 70-75 is in place, the Oppo will go to the big screen.

I'm choosing the Oppo 203 over the Sony X800 due to the Oppo having both HDR10 and DolbyVision. The Sony only has HDR10. Oh and I'll be buying from a vendor who will do the region-free hardware upgrade. Adds another $190 to the cost but worth it. And of course I've heard a lot of good things about Oppo.

My First Oppo coming this Christmas 2017.

I wouldn't pay that much as you can easily purchased the MOD kit linked below and install it yourself without opening up the unit. This external MOD kit works on the 103/105 and the 203 player too. Furthermore, it costs only $59.00!

Brad, I have a Vizio 70-inch M Series display and have been very pleased with it. I think it's a great "bang for the buck" display if you are looking for a screen that large. Vizio's support has really impressed me, too. I have the 2016 model, and they have been continually improving the display via firmware upgrades. They even added new functionality which required a new remote control to operate that functionality, and shipped a new remote to existing owners at no charge. All I had to do was fill out a form online with my serial number and date of purchase, and I had the new remote a week later -- and they pushed the firmware update with the enhancements to my display as part of the process. So all I had to do was teach the IR codes to my Harmony remote with the new Vizio remote when it arrived.

If you can swing the cost, the Oppo would be an ideal player to pair with the display. I own the Sony X-800 player, and it has been a good player for the money. However, it lacks Dolby Vision support, as you mentioned. Oppo makes great products -- I still use my Oppo 980H DVD player. I believe the only other current option for a player with DV support is from LG, and that player has been getting a lot of negative feedback online.

YMMV check brick & mortar Sam's Club locations for a great price on the 2016 P75-C1. TV unit is the same as 2017 P75-E1 once firmware updated & includes tablet remote which the 2017s dropped. The Sam's by my work about 3 weeks ago had 3 of them brand new for $2000. They were no longer in the main TV section but off to the side where they put open box returns/display models for sale.

    Guys,

I am tired of not having access to Atmos on Blu-ray releases. It seems like Atmos has become an exclusive 4k format.

I think I know the answer to this already but I want to confirm....

    Not having a 4k setup.....

Can I buy the Oppo 4k player and have it down-rez 4k discs to 1080p but still have Atmos sound?

    Thanks in advance

Yes, but many UHD players can do that, too, and still retain the Atmos sound.

However, I've read that UHD transfers that are encoded with HDR (which is almost all of them), don't look very good down rezzed, rather dark and a bit murky. But I'm no expert with that. I'm sure a few other people do this already and can advise you better.

You can, but it would be a hell of a lot cheaper to buy an Xbox One to play UHDs -UNLESS- you care about DV. DV is really the only reasonable reason to buy an Oppo. I know you are crazy with the stuff you buy Ron but you aren't going to get a single feature that looks or sounds any better by blowing 400+ on a 203. If you gotta buy a real UHD deck you can do that too for under $200.

    Sam,

I think Ron imports 3-D discs too so it would make sense for him to stick with the Oppo 203 because he can simply install the $58.00 MOD kit that would make the 203 region-free. Furthermore, I think Ron is going to care about Dolby Vision as any serious HT buff should be.

Yeah, but Ron is future proofing as he's looking to get a 4K PJ in the next couple of years.

Next question, can anyone on HTF recommend a vendor to purchase a zippo UDP-203, I mean an Oppo UDP-203?
    Cursed auto-correct!'
