I saw on TV a couple being escorted by cops - was this the couple in question?

I hope they don't have real jobs - as if they have any shame - but _man_ that would be awkward...

I couldn't care less if they do, if it's in a situation as described above.
Thats fine, but obviously enough people do care that the law still stands. Thats how laws work in this country, if enogh people are apposed to them, they go away (prohibition, segregation, etc). I couldnt care less if people smoke weed in their own home or if 19 year olds drink, but right now its against the law, so anyone caught doing it is a criminal of some sort. We cant just ignore the non-violent crimes or the ones that you dont personnaly mind.

Of course not, but things would be much better if I got to write the laws!
I'm just not a huge fan of arresting people for these "victimless crimes".
"Shoplifting is a victimless crime... like punching someone in the dark" - sorry, unrelated, but the previous sentence reminded me of that classic quote from Nelson in "The Simpsons". :)

No such thing as a victemless crime. This should be very apparent on (of all places) a forum dedicated to the enjoyment of what amounts to intellectual property. (in relation to piracy)

Jim J, thanks for the corrections. It's amazing how things get misreported.

As a fan of the show, I'm completely bummed. It's 2:15pm right now in Boston, and it really suck that in 45 minutes I won't be able to tune in to O&A (except for a lousy re-run, that is).

But from an objective standpoint, it was incredibly stupid. Then again, it was also stupid to say the Boston mayor was dead. It's also stupid to throw girls in a huge barrel and throw crickets and eels on them, or to stab themselves in the thigh with a staple gun.

Unless you're listening to NPR, radio is not the place to find intelligent discourse. I like them because they're hilarious, not smart.

Off topic, but Jim Norton is currently my single favorite comic in the business. I saw him perform and it was the best stand-up show I'd ever seen.

I wonder what happens with the syndication now. Do whoever inherit the time slot in NY get syndicated also, or do all of these stations now have to scramble to find replacement?

The optimist in me likes to think this is all a blessing in disguise. WNEW is doing poorly, with O&A basically keeping them afloat (and moderate success on one or two other programs). Maybe, after the dust settle for a while, they'll get picked up by a better station. I wouldn't be surprised if they end up in Philadelphia, as they are extremely popular there.

They got kicked off in Boston for saying that mayor Menino was dead
Yeah... imagine my dismay when I found out this wasn't true  ... :D
This year, on April Fools Day, Storm and Birdsey did something very similar to the "Menino is dead" hoax... they announced that James "Whitey" Bulger (notorious South Boston gangster, #2 on FBI's most wanted list) had been apprehended.
Apparently, some of the families of Whitey's victims were NOT very happy when they found out this was a hoax, and a similar controverty ensued.
A few weeks back, S&B also broadcast a "live" sex act. Basically, they brought in a couple, in which both the male and the female were bi-sexual, and another male friend of theirs. S&B were trying to "prove" that oral-sex feels the same, regardless of whether it is performed by a male or a female. So, they had the boyfriend receive oral sex from both his girlfriend, and their male friend, while blindfolded. He had to make the distinction of which one was giving him head in what order.
I didn't listen to the entire broadcast. The whole thing just seemed trite to me. Is this really necessary? I'm no fan of censorship; however, in my opinion, these are the kinds of broadcasts that do cross the line.

Sure there is! "Sodomy" is still illegal in some places in the US. If you & your wife trade oral sex with one another in the privacy of your own bedroom, tell me, who is the victim in this "crime"?
If I build a fence on my own property without a permit, who is the victim? :)

And you did the right thing: you turned it off. I've never even listened to these guys (don't know if they're evn on the air here), stuff like this both grosses me out and bores me at the same time. But it doesn't offend me - what offends me is when people try to tell the rest of the population what they can and can not listen to.

I would understand if it was a business decision, and maybe it was, maybe advertisers were pulling their ads or something (understandable). But if it's just done because it violates some kind of "decency standard", then it's just plain wrong.

I'm glad these guys got fired because they displaced the Don & Mike show on Washington's WJFK. Also, their show went beyond poor taste IMO and they were not funny. Don & Mike occasionally do stuff in poor taste but at least they're funny. :)
Purely selfish reasons I admit.
Also, Don & Mike were top rated, O&A got shit ratings in DC. Why tht hell did the station even leave them on?

Well, in Philly and New York, it was quite the reverse.

Don and Mike are pretty much hated in Philly, and in fact, I think they were dropped in New York.

O & A on the other hand, were the top rated program on WNEW in New York, and have great ratings in Philly too.

In other markets, I'm not aware of the standings.

I have called the Bob and Tom show the stupid and moron show since they (clear channel, the group that ruined local radio) put the piece of crap on the air in the mornings instead of music close to 12 years ago.
At that time I listened to the radio all day long while being a local truck driver and one day instead of music on the last station without a morning show, I get the syndicated, un-humorous rambling of a couple of overgrown juvenile delinquents and they do not even play any music on their show except their own stuff, which might even by good if you could hear it over the laugh track they bought third hand from the theatrical supply close out section

my point really was that at least we have alternatives to local radio and for that I am glad

by the way, I do have a thesaurus but the CD is not in the drive right now

Two things. First, I never really thought Opie or Anthony were very funny. It was the guests that made the show. Jim Norton is a laugh-riot. I could listen to him all day. Second, the irony of Opie and Anthony getting canned is that they were extremely arrogant and spent a good amount of time criticizing other radio shows (formats, personalities, etc.). They made fun of other radio personalities getting canned due to low ratings and the like. They have nothing to be arrogant over now.

For all O&A fans I have to say that the duo was the best thing on radio. I find them (and Jim Norton) hysterical. No other show anywhere has matched my cynical view of the world as precisely as O&A's.

I can only hope that some other station will pick up their contract from Viacom so I can get my daily O&A fix.

O&A WILL ALWAYS WIN IN THE END!

Eric, I have to second your opinion on Bob & Tom. While they occasionally have funny bits, the humor is negated by them laughing at their own jokes. The annoyance factor is much higher than the actual humor. I actually got to meet Bob & Tom quite a few years back when a friend of mine worked for 102.9 here in Dayton. Let me tell you, they're just as "funny" in person as they are on the radio. After about 10 minutes of sitting there listening to them laugh at each other, we left.

Although I agree that O&A should have been canned, I readily accept that they will be on the air again. However, whichever station picks them up will likely give them a very short leash. One has to think that O&A will eventually run out of opportunities if they keep crossing the line so blatantly and tastelessly.

It goes even beyond just a matter of decency (horrors--what an obscene word that is lately!); as the NY Times stated, the radio station was responsible for creating a situation that virtually promoted breaking the law. But hell--who cares! Law, decency--let's just party.

I will miss SOME of the Opie and Anthony show. I listened to them only occasionally. What seemed to set them apart from other "shock jocks" is that they were mean. Howard Stern may be juvenile and crass, but never mean. I think that the "Sex for Sam" stunt went too far. Has anyone heard anything from Jim Cook (of Sam Adams) comment on this?
Philip Hamm--
re: Don & Mike. From what I understand, Don became a manager at WJFK, got Liddy off the air, moved D&M to the mid-day slot for a challenge and to try something different (they already conquered mornings back in the WAVA days and afternoons on WJFK). I used to listen to them on the way home form work and now I miss the show.

Chris,
I am a long-time listener of the Don and Mike show myself. I remember listening to them a WHILE back when they were still on WAVA in the mornings. They really are a staple of the D.C. radio community. I remember when Don (Mike Sorce's) son, Bart, could barely talk 'cause he was so young. He would basically get on the phone and talk gibberish.

I also remember when Robbay was just an intern and they had a woman producer.

I'll give Don and Mike one thing: Over the years, they have managed to keep their show consistent over the years without losing their touch. Well, except for the whole Leah Remini bit....UGH

I even remember when the Greaseman was on DC101 in the mornings!
