It looks awful on TV. I hope this is an improvement. It was actually a bigger hit than "North by Northwest" in 1959 and deserves better treatment.

Was it really? I wonder if that was worldwide or just in the US

I think Tony Curtis helped bring in some younger audience which probably helped the US box office. North by Northwest was released in the middle of July while Operation Petticoat had its New York City premiere in early December which means most of its box office came in early 1960.
