For some reason my TX-SR601 could play DVD-Audio and SACD through optical cable and 5.1 analogs inputs. Is this normal?

They will play that way, but they are playing the DD 5.1 or dts tracks.
To play the HiRes tracks, they have to play thru the 6 analog outputs of the player. Not familiar with the terms or labels of your TX-SR601, but on my JVC I have to push the DVD-Multi button on my receiver, to play the HiRes.....
On my friends Denon 2803 receiver, he has to push a button labelled EXT. IN.
You also have to make sure the inputs and outputs are enabled and assigned to the right places.

The DD 5.1 or dts tracks you've listened to sounds good, but the HiRes sounds better. The HiRes tracks are mixed differently.
    Good luck!

The digital signal is probably down-mixed or simply 2 of the 5.1 channels. As stated above, it wouldn't be high res anymore. Probably got down-sampled to 96/24 or lower PCM resolution.
