If you're an owner of a recent vintage Onkyo receiver, you may have the received the wrong microphone for use with its Audyssey calibration system. I bought the 707 in 2009 and learned this weekend that perhaps a year's worth of units were shipped with the wrong microphone, min included. Onkyo has recently said they will replace the shipped mics with the correct models.

The shipped microphone is model no ACM1. The correct model is ACM1H. The model is on the original packing box the microphone came in.

The easiest way to submit a request is through Onkyo's website. I've read you can call or email, too.

(And FYI: your unit's serial # is on the original packing box, so you don't have to waste an hour trying to squint at it on the receiver in the dusty, shadowy back of your entertainment center.)

I submitted my request Sunday night and today received a confirmation from Onkyo

Thank You for contacting Onkyo USA Product Support.
Due to the holidays we are experiencing a heavy volume of inquiries. We apologize for the delay in responding. Thank you for your patience.
We will be sending you a replacement setup mic within two weeks.
Thank you,
XXXX

I don't personally know how many units this affects in Onkyo's line. Audyssey is encouraging people to do this as well. I suppose they don't want their good name damaged by Onkyo's hardware goof. I've read this makes a big difference in how the Audyssey software works.

(Mods, please forgive me...)
Details can be found at AVS in the Onkyo 707 thread

Looks like much ado about nothing.

From the Audyssey Rep who initially encouraged folks to request a new mic:

We have been investigating further and have finally gotten to the (true) bottom of this issue. As some of you already said earlier, it did indeed turn out to be a misprinting of the mic model on the box!
Here are the facts:
Onkyo decided to use the Audyssey mic in late 2008. At that time Audyssey was switching from the ACM-1 to the ACM-1H.
But, the new mic manufacturer was printing ACM-1 for a few months even though the mics were the correct ACM-1H.
I have received about 10 mics from AVSForum users and they were all perfectly correct ACM-1H mics. This led to further digging and we finally got to the right person at the mic factory that confirmed the printing error.
As for the few hundred ACM-1 mics that Onkyo had for evaluation, we were told that they were destroyed and never shipped.
So in conclusion: if you have an Onkyo or Integra product with an Audyssey mic then it is an ACM-1H even if the box says ACM-1. It has a nickel plated (silver) mono minijack plug.
I know that some of you have been updating other forums and I would appreciate it if you could post this info there as well. We consider this issue closed. Except, of course, for the counterfeit mics that are still on eBay. They are easy to spot: stereo minijack. Stay clear of those.

I was working for the wholesale distributor at the time.

We actually had some 706 still in the box, So a couple were opened up, and sure enough...the box of the 707 and box for the 706 "said the same thing"...but the mics were indeed different.

Installers were the ones most embarrassed by this...then. It was one thing to buy it from Best Buy/Amazon and have this come up, it was another "I'm going to build you the HT of your dreams" person get kicked in the nads.
