how much room is needed to vent? i just bought a new rack and there's a 3.5 inch gap between the top of the unit and the next shelf. there are two side walls, but no front or back. there's 5" of venting room in the back. is this enough or will i have to place the receiver on top of the shelf?

I've never seen any specs on this. I doubt that you will have any problem with the space that you specified. I would set it up and just see how warm it gets. Check it after different play time periods. If it starts getting too hot, either move it or put a clip-on fan by it to help move the air and cool it down.
