    Sony KP-53S55

I know this model is an oldie (1994), but the convergence is realy starting to drift near the edges of the screen. The "options menu" convergence deal wont fix it, so i either need a service manual or someone to tell me how to enter service mode on this sucker. (if there even IS one)

If the service convergence is the same as my 1995 KP-53XBR45, what a pain!
There are about 100 different settings to mess with for convergence.
I also had the same problem with convergence on the sides and did a half respectable job of fiddling around in the service menu.
I keep telling myself to buy the service manual, but I like to live on the edge.
Write down all parameters and values before changing them
There are about 225 on the XBR so it is important to be able to get back to the originals if something does not work out.
To enter service mode on the Sony...
With the power off, press Display, 5, Volume+, Power on.
Only press the #1 or #4 keys to cycle up or down to write down all parameters before proceding further.
Press the #3 and #6 keys to change the values.
To escape service mode press Power Off.
To erase all changes unplug the set.
Put up a convergence grid with circles(black background with white grid) from Avia or Video Essentials.
For convergence I changed the green, red and blue skew, bow, pin, etc.

    Steve,

Don't you have to SAVE the changes you make? Isn't that required after you make the changes?

To save the changes press Muting, Enter and you will see WRITE in red letters on the screen.
Do this for every parameter that is changed.
Just make sure that you have a record of all original settings before any tweaking is done.
    Good luck to you James!

While you are in the service menu there a few other settings to tweak.
To remove red push by adjusting the color decoder --
    R-YR & R-YB should be around 12-15
    To improve black level--
    Y-DC set to 0
