Hey guys -

I apologize if this has already been covered, but I did a quick forum search and wasn't able to get a definitive answer. I have one of the first PS2's. I got it for xmas the first month it was out. I know that the original PS2's did not support progressive scan dvds, but read something that said it would support 480p in games. Do I just need to buy the component cables (recommendations for price/quality would be helpful) and enable the component out in the system config menu? My tv has both component and a DVI connection. I already have an optical connection for the audio. I am looking forward to getting GT4 which I understand is in 480p. Any chance there is a software or firmware download that enables the ps2 to play dvds in 480p? Don't need it, but might as well get the most recent firmware or software if I can. Thanks.

As far as DVD movie playback is concerned, there are no firmware updates planned by Sony (that I'm aware of) which will support progressive scan on earlier PS2s (I bought a PS2 at launch as well, so I can empathize :frowning: ). Thankfully, 480p mode in games are supported throughout all of the models.

On a side note, CompUSA has GT4 advertised in this week's flyer for $37.99. You can either pick it up in-store or take one of their flyers to Best Buy or Circuit City for a price match + 10% difference.

Thanks, Ken. Yup, i saw the compusa flyer and that's what got me thinking. I've come across some of the other titles that were supposed to be in 480p - tekken 4 among them - is there a definitive list somewhere?

Charlie:

I'm sure someone has assembled a comprehensive list somewhere; I just haven't found it (yet). The following titles support 480p (I'm sure there are more):
  • .hack Infection
  • .hack Mutation
  • Alien Hominid
  • ATV Offroad Fury 2
  • Beyond Good and Evil
  • Burnout 2
  • Burnout 3: Takedown
  • Commandos 2
  • ESPN College Hoops 2K5
  • ESPN NBA 2K5
  • ESPN NFL 2K5
  • ESPN NFL Football 2K4
  • Ghosthunter
  • Gran Turismo 4
  • Guilty Gear Isuka
  • Guilty Gear XX
  • Guilty Gear XX Reloaded
  • Jak II
  • Jak 3
  • Jet Li's Rise to Honor
  • Lowrider
  • Mega Man X8
  • Mortal Kombat: Deception
  • MVP Baseball 2004
  • MVP Baseball 2005
  • NBA Street Volume 2
  • NBA 2K3
  • NFL 2K3
  • Primal
  • Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
  • Prince of Persia: The Warrior Within
  • Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando
  • Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal
  • Robotech Battlecry
  • Robotech Invasion
  • Shadows of Rome
  • SOCOM: US Navy Seals
  • SOCOM II: US Navy Seals
  • Soul Calibur II
  • Splashdown: Rides Gone Wild
  • SSX 3
  • Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
  • Star Wars: Bounty Hunter
  • Suikoden IV
  • Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain
  • Tekken 4
  • Tekken 5
  • Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven
  • The Getaway
  • The Simpsons: Hit & Run
  • True Crime: Streets of LA
  • Vampire Night
  • Van Helsing

The problem is that activating progressive scan isn't the same for every game. Some are done through the PS2's display options, others through the in-game menu, others require holding down the Triangle / Triangle + Square / other button sequences while the program is being loaded, etc.

Thanks Ken for the list of 480p games. I was searching the web for the same thing and find this link http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htfo...hreadid=100055 but I think it's either lost or I have actually find it, this thread!?

Have you find the more updated list? Will you update this one for more details, like GT4 supports 480p and 1080i!!

cheers

I'm still trying to find a site with a comprehensive listing of games that support 720p and/or 1080i; the problem is that these sites are usually dependent on user contributions for info and updates.
