I am in the process of putting together a 5.1 HT but already have an old carver m0.5t amp and pre. I have been playing with the idea of using the amp to power the mains and using a receiver (hasn't been bought yet) to power the surrounds and center. Is the quality of this old amp better then the internal amps of a sony da4es/da5es? Is it advisable to configure the system this way?

If I went with complete seperates, I would utilize the carver and perhaps buy another to power the surrounds and figure out something to do with the center. How is the quality of these old carvers compare with a parasound which is in a similar price bracket?

Thanks for your opinions and thoughts,
    -Chad

I think any old Carver would improve the sound of any receiver, especially for music.Just make sure the receiver has pre-outs and your set.You could even set up for 7.1 if you have the room for it.Let the Carver run your mains and the receiver do the center and the 4 surrounds.
