recently purchased a panasonic scht-760 from best buy and shortly will be returning it. actually produced decent sound, but a lack of inputs and upgradeability has made me rethink that purchase

right now i'm contemplating a couple diff options
onkyo sr800 ($350 from shoponkyo.com) - looks to be a nice setup but huge speakers
onkyo sr750 - speakers are a tad bit smaller
onkyo s5100 - looks to be a step up from sr800 but with smaller speakers
samsung as720 - has full hdmi, but not sure its powerfull enough (650w vs 1200w on the 5100; also have read something about it being 4ohm so its even less powerful but not sure what that means)

have also seen the onkyo 605 receiver on accessories4less for 329 shipped w/ 3 yr warranty, figured i could get that and a few separates, maybe just center, left & right and a sub and worry bout rears later.

what do you guys think makes the most sense? a couple of requirments i'm lookin to meet
1) under $500
2) would prefer smaller speakers, some of the onkyos have what seem to be giant speakers
3) hdmi in & hdmi out (doesnt have to be full hdmi, can be passthrough)

on the samsung for instance, since its full hdmi (audio & video) does that only matter if ur playin blu ray dvds? or will i get better audio play a normal dvd on a ps3 on that since its hdmi does audio also?

any help is appreciated as i'm making progress but still lost

I looked at the SR800 and the three main speakers (left, right and center) are the minimum I would use for a home theater. At most they are about 18" tall. Those are noit giant. These are giant home theater speakers - link.

The SR800 receiver looks to have a lot of decent features and the 3 main speakers look to be decent. The first thing I would upgrade would be the sub but that can always wait. As for HDMI, I don't have that on my Pioneer receiver. I connect my HDMI components to a Monoprice HDMI matrix switch box and have my Harmony 880 programmed to switch to the appropriate input. My receiver does have 7.1 inputs so I can utilize that as well.

my mistake, they might not be giant by home theatre terms, but right now i have a panny HTIB with much smaller speakers, i'm in a relatively tiny condo and, with our tv mounted on a tiny wall where the bigger sized speakers we probably wouldnt be able to mount just cuz of size restrictions

how would the polk r150s compare to the onkyos, what about combined with the Polk CS1 center channel?

right now i'm thinkin i might go this route
receiver - onkyo 605
fronts - polk r150s
center - polk cs1
leave out the backs for now
subwoofer, no idea but definitely looking for something on a budget

what that system be better than the onkyo setup?
