    does it?

this brings to mind the hellboy story called "The Vårcolac", where hellboy is confronted by a colossal vampire who, we are told, hates hellboy not because of what he is, but because of what he could be, but isn't.

until a while ago, i had no interest in the punisher. at all. but since garth ennis has been writing the series with his characteristic and inimitable genius, it's one of my favorites.

which is to say, before ennis, i had no real concept of what the punisher could be as a story. and now i do. which means it's certainly conceivable to me that the new punisher movie could be much worse than the original, since it's failure can be all the more catastrophic given the available benchmark of perfection in ennis' version of the character, a benchmark not availbale to the makers of the first movie.

in other words, i may very well detest this movie not for what it is, but for what it could have been, but isn't.

I trust Moriarty far more than Harry. Harry's probably just pissed that Jonathan Hensleigh didn't buy him off. The Berardinelli review is a bit more troubling.

Well I'm still jazzed to see this one. [IMG] AICN's reviews don't hold a lot of weight with me. [IMG]

I agree with Adam. Knowles isn't the most...reliable of viewers. While the talkbackers are the most amusing part of the site...they bring up a good point. He has no objectivity. James B. is a different story. I don't always agree with him, but he's certainly objective and fair. We'll see.

    Take care,
    Chuck

Yeah James B. reviews usually parallel mine as well.

Not too tragic for me as I never liked the vigilante angle of the Punisher. He seems more like a villian - especially after continuing his crusade after avenging his family.

That's certainly my concern. Hmmm...wonder if Scott's seen it yet.

The first half of this movie RULES!

The second half would be an ok goofy genre ride. But, compared to the first half, it is SO totally wrong.

    I'm bummed. [IMG]

I remember it being very adult in its violence

For one Dolph plays the film like he's tired. Not like his soul is downtrodden but more like he's been cramming all night for a physics final and now has to kill some bad guys.

Then there were the ninjas on the funhouse slides...

Shame to hear about this one. I'll have to see it, but my expectations have been lowered (weren't too high to begin with). Can't possibly be worse than Ecks vs Sever.

Looks like this one is gonna be pretty polarizing. I'm still looking forward to it, but will now see it BEFORE Volume 2 when my brother and I pull a double header Friday night, so it doesn't end the evening on a bad note if it sucks.

Dolph plays every part like that. He was like that when I was watching Dark Angel last month, and Masters of the Universe was on this afternoon and he was doing the same thing in that too [IMG]

BUMB GUY: "With your flair for entrances, you should consider a career as a actor."

Dolph Lundgren as THE PUNISHER: "I'll think about it."

Man that film blew, but I still watch it when it's on television, it actually has a pretty good score. An no intrusive Rock songs to ruin it. it did that by itself.

I will see the new one and make up my own mind, The clip I saw of the film was enough to get me to see it. I don't much care for Harry Knowles fanboy reviews or many reviews for that matter, I like reviews of films that are dripping with sarcasm when it's a bad film but usually reviews just piss me off. hehe.

    I beg to differ.

Here is Dolph circa I Come in Peace/Dark Angel.

Look, he's so alert and his senses are keen. Sure, he may be burdened with the knowledge that an intergalactic pusher wants to kill and/or farm him for drugs, but that doesn't keep him from keeping his eyes open.

Then, we have Dolph from The Punisher.

Now, he may be weary from battling the underbelly of crime (which is primarily consisting of ill-trained ninjas), but I think he's just taken some NyQuil. [IMG]
