Still waiting for Kino to re-release Kurosawa's Dersu Uzala so i can retire the non 16:9 dvd they released from 2000.
Unfortunately, this may be a very long wait, the fate of this and the Russian War & Peace are very much intertwined as both films 65mm O-neg's and soundtrack elements are sitting in various Russian state archives, and they currently have no 65mm 4K+ scanners, nor any intention to ship them abroad...

This is the main reason Criterion hasn't released DU since the days of laserdisc. All existing transfers of both films come from 35mm.

Another reason Criterion could not and cannot release Dersu Uzala is because the rights were and are with Kino Lorber. But everything else you mentioned is correct, the needed film elements are all over the place and the only thing available at this time are 35mm prints.

No licence infringement comment was intended, apologies if you took it that way, I only mentioned Criterion as they have released it before & continue to release more Kurosawa's, than any other US label.

What's the story with Stalker? It's coming to blu-ray in the UK next year. Any info on the US edition?

This may be a stupid question, but:

1) cant someone travel to the archive, brining a scanner (I don't know how easily they travel) scan the film, then come home. Perform any restoration here from the scan, then release it?

or 2) could they ship the print to the states to be scanned

or 3) if that is to risky. could they duplicate the negative, ship the duplicate stateside so we can scan it

or 4) can it be scanned from a 70mm Print? There must be 70 mm prints available outside of Russia

I understand there are cost factors, (especially option 1), but there must be some way to get a scan. Forgive me if my technical knowledge is limited and my questions seem silly. It is just frustrating to have such a masterpiece unavailable.

These are two Russian financed masterpieces & given the current state of east west relations, the only way this is gonna happen is by them wanting to do it, there's plenty of Oligarch's who could help make it happen. It's an involved archival job as well as physical and digital restoration - certainly W&P would be the costliest restoration ever undertaken given it's length.

They would not ship them abroad, duplicating would be costly, if theres even any labs left in Russia that could handle 10 hrs+ of 65mm Neg. Scanning from a print would be a waste of time and money as the results would be poor.

There are only 2 custom 65mm 8K scanners in existence, both in California, immovable and worth a $lot, someone in Russia would have to buy the 3rd!

This is great news, two of John Payne's films coming out on blu-ray. My most wanted blu-ray is another of John's films - Slightly Scarlet. Any chance of Kino releasing this?
