That's the typical Hollywood movie where everything is wrapped up neat the end but, that is Not Life and I think that's what Braff was trying to portray here with Sarsgaards character and the releationship between him and his Father.
He screwed up his life plain and simple and never moved forward and believe it or not that happens quite a bit with people with no feel good resolution.
