I was originally planning to watch more movies on Halloween day, but I wasn't feeling too well and was just too tired, almost fell asleep during Suspiria! :frowning:

Anyway, this is what I watched:

28. Suspiria
29. Carrie (1976) (my favorite movie of all time)

I didn't reach 31, but oh well. Even if I did, I'd still feel pretty weak compared to Peter. ;)

My previous Scary Film Challenge tallies--

2001: 58
2002: 70

As usual, this was a lot of fun, and the perfect excuse to dust off some old favorites, and catch up on some I'd missed (or thought I had seen years ago, but really didn't).

However, after this year's insane orgy of watching as many scary movies as is inhumanly possible, I think I've taken this as far as I can. I've never watched this amount of movies in one month before, and I doubt I ever will again (though I typically watch quite a bit).

Therefore, I'd like to take this opportunity to formally announce my retirement as three-time undefeated Scary Movie Challenge champion!

Bow and scrape before the Ultimate Splatterrific Scary Movie King! Rah-hahahahahaaaa! :D :D :D

Hope you all have had at least a fraction of the fun that I have.

Yours cruelly,

Peter M. Fitzgerald

Here's the remainder of what I watched:

Pumpkinhead- A definite classic with a spectacular monster! The film is very touching, yet very chilling as well.

Demons- Great gorefest from Lamberto Bava that is pure fun.

Cat's Eye- One of the best anthologies out there! The cameos from Cujo and Christine are great touches, and the Quitters Inc. segment is a riot, and easily the best. James Woods never disappoints.

Army of Darkness- Fantastic and hilarious finale to the Evil Dead franchise. It may actually be my fav of the three.

Motel Hell- Still just okay as I remembered it. Some nice black humor, and the climax with the pig mask and chainsaw is fantastic, but the film overall is just okay.

Bad Moon- Excellent and underrated little dog vs. werewolf gem. The werewolf looks outstanding, and the rivalry with the dog is great to watch.

Fright Night- Classic vampire flick with fantastic performances from Roddy McDowell and Chris Sarandon. One of the best.

The Last Broadcast- Pretty damn creepy film that is only marred by a disappointing ending. Its definitely no Blair Witch, but its great and creepy all the same.

Dagon- A modern classic, and the best HP Lovecraft adaptation to date. The fish people are freaky villains, and the story is perfect with a truly fitting ending.

In the Mouth of Madness- Carpenter's last great film, and one of his top 5 best. Sam Neill is outstanding as always, and Jurgen Prochnow is simply born to play the perfect villains. The Lovecraftian story is wonderful, and the film is a major underrated gem.

Alien director's cut- It was great seeing this on the big screen, and the changes were interesting. Seeing it in the theater was one fantastic experience indeed.

Finally, my must watch on Halloween three:

Prince of Darkness- Carpenter's absolute best, and a very frightening film at that. The score is Carpenter's greatest as well, and the intelligent plot is one of the most interesting I've come across. Stellar ending as well.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch- Second best film in the series, and my personal favorite. Very underrated with a major sense of dread, a score that rivals the original's, great performances from Atkins and O'Herlihy, a major dose of bizarre freakiness, and a great downer ending. A classic despite the naysayers.

The Blair Witch Project- An utter masterpiece of horror, and the best film of the 90s if you ask me. The scariest film I've seen, and great use of the terrifying unknown. Brilliant film that surpassed the hype for me, and a perfect Halloween viewing.

Well my fellow Gorehounds, I'd like to blow you away with an astounding final run at greatness, but the truth of the matter is....I fell short. I took Saturday off to watch my final movies Friday night.....but ended up getting shitfaced instead. But I did manage two more:

Re-Animator (1985)
directed by Stuart Gordon

I'm still not sure if I've seen this before or not. I thought I had, but much of the film wasn't familiar. It doesn't matter much. I enjoyed the film, but didn't give it its due attention. A quick summary: There's an evil dead cat, then some naked man tries to kill our heroes, then there's more naked people trying to kill people, and there's some lobotomies thrown in, then the world's worst night watchman/security guard makes his presence known a couple of times, then some stuff happens. Yep this one kicks ass!

I must admit, I was mostly toast when I saw it though. So I'll refrain from any long detail on acting, directing, editing, story, or anything like that. All I can say is that there was a severed head, and a female's naughty parts in the same scene. And when you are three sheets to the wind (and exactly where in the Hell did that phrase originate?) That's Entertainment!

May (2002)
directed by Lucky McKee

My thoughts on this film is well documented in several other threads. I'll bore no one with re-hashing them.

Finished off the challenge by watching the following (all first-time viewings):

The Howling
A great werewolf movie. The effects have held up fairly well. Not that they don't look like effects in many cases, but they aren't hokey or anything. Also good to see something a little different from your usual werewolf plot.

28 Days Later
Quite possibly the best of the movies I watched for the challenge. (May and Insomnia have a shot at this as well, though.) Like most good horror movies, it understood that monsters are somewhat scary, but it's people that are really scary.

The Ring (US version)
Thought this was pretty good, but certainly not the new standard for horror or anything. I have nothing against PG-13 horror in most cases (The Sixth Sense pulled it off admirably), but here, i think it hurt the movie overall. I suppose my main problem was that the premise was kind of hokey and this is supposed to be a serious horror movie. Thought the ending really worked, though.

A Comedy of Terrors
Okay, but not great. Showed signs of being shot way too quickly. The premise and script were both fine, but the acting seemed to be overplayed in places and it looked very cheap.

Dracula 2000
Not Oscar-material, but I enjoyed it. Has one of the best takes on the origin of vampires I've seen, plus you get to see Vitamin C naked. Now that's what I call a movie.

Insomnia
An excellent thriller abotu moral compromise. I'm not sure what to say about this movie as the premise is pretty much a spoiler, but they had a great script and great director, then filled it with great actors. Also, it takes place in an interesting location. Can't go wrong that way.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space
Hi-larious. Not actually very scary, not is it intended to be, but the vast majority of the jokes work and it has some of the best and most disturbing clowns I've seen in a movie. And how could anyoen not love alien clowns who make a balloon dog to track down some kids in the woods?

Okay, since no one is stepping up to the plate and posting a recap, I figured I should.

First, let me say congratulations to all who took part in the challange. Thanks for helping make this year's challange a great one! Also, a congrats is in order to Peter M Fitzgerald for being the first (I believe) to ever break the 100 movie mark in a month. Your insanity is a inspiration to us all :D
