***Official 2nd Annual HTF Western Movies/TV Shows Challenge 2025***

1. Watch Western-Movies/TV Shows from midnight March 1, 2025 through March 31, 2025 (use your own time zone to set the ending time).

2. Each Western-Movie/TV show can be viewed by physical media such as DVD, Blu-ray, 4K/UHD, etc. Other means of viewing can be done either by streaming or just watching a TV broadcast such as TCM or any other TV channel and/or internet outlet/app. Recorded or not recorded doesn't matter.

3. Unlike other HTF Movie Challenges, there isn't a minimum number of Westerns you have to watch during this Challenge. Each movie/TV show episode counts as one point each.

4. The only requirement during this Western Challenge is to briefly tell us why you liked or disliked each Western you watched. Please note the viewing means by which you watch the movie/TV show. Whether it was by physical media, streaming, TV broadcast and etc. Furthermore, your opinion can be expressed in just a few sentences or even longer paragraphs as to why you enjoyed the movie/TV show or why the movie/TV show didn't work for you. Such comments serve as an incentive for other people to watch or not watch a Western they never seen beforehand.

5. At the end of the challenge, the point totals will be added up based on the one-point system outlined in number 2 above. There won't be any participation categories like there are in other HTF Challenges. At the end of the Challenge, I will simply tabulate the total number of points each participant accumulated during March. Each participant will be listed with the number of points each has accumulated during March.

On March 1st, which is Saturday, the HTF Second Annual "Western Movies/TV Series Challenge" begins in earnest. Therefore, this thread is now open for placeholder posts to be placed before the weekend. Also, on Saturday morning, “Western Challenge” participants will be given extended edit privileges on a temporary basis except for those that previously abused that privilege. That editing privilege will end on April 2nd and final viewing tabulations will then be posted.

Again, it doesn't matter how many films or TV series you view in a month. What matters is participation and the joy of watching "Westerns" entertainment. Just have fun!
:D

A terrific brutal western limited series on Netflix. I loved every minute of this bleak violent story of Mormons, Indians and settlers with villains on both sides. Based on true events and characters.
10/10 for me.

Episode 1. “At a desolate outpost, Sara and her son Devin forge new connections while searching for a guide to help them navigate treacherous trails further west”
An awesome first episode that sets the tone for the series. The attack on the settlers was tremendous film making.

Episode 2. “A frightening encounter takes Sara's party by surprise; a deeply wounded Jacob forms a posse to find Abish; Isaac reconnects with his past.“ This terrific second episode has one of the most brutal terrifying sequences I’ve seen. When you see it you’ll know.

Episode 3. Following a lead, Jacob joins a bounty hunter's search; Brigham Young rides into Fort Bridger; Sara, Devin and Isaac come face-to-face with evil. Another terrific episode that builds on the last. The encounter with the inbred family is terrifying.

Episode 4. Red Feather vows to fight; Jacob acts on his suspicions; Abish receives shocking news; en route to Crooks Springs, the elements intensify.

Episode 5. As Devin's leg worsens, Sara faces a terrifying choice; Brigham Young makes Bridger an offer; Abish delivers a stark warning to the Shoshone

Episode 6. Ignoring the danger, Isaac sets out to rescue Sara; Jacob's search for Abish comes to an end; Bridger celebrates before saying goodbye.

These are the movies and TV-series I watched for this challenge.

1. Posse (1975), Paramount DVD. Enjoyable and interesting western starring Kirk Douglas and Bruce Dern. A tough marshal (Douglas) with political ambitions leads an elite posse to capture a train robber (Dern) and his gang. I thought that it started kind of average, but it changed course during the last half hour with a twist of fate for the main characters. Watched on March 1st.

2. Seven Men from Now (1956), Paramount DVD. Directed by Budd Boetticher and starring Randolph Scott, Gail Russel and Lee Marvin. A former sheriff blames himself for his wife's death during a Wells Fargo robbery and vows to track down and kill the seven men responsible. Exciting western filled with tension and great dialogue from a script by Burt Kennedy. This western held my interest for the whole running time and left me wanting more. Watched on March 2nd.
As a bonus feature on the DVD I watched the documentary: ”Budd Boetticher - An American Original". Very interesting!

3. Navajo Joe (1966), 88 Films Blu-ray. I prepared myself for this movie by first listening to the great and creative film score by Ennio Morricone. I have listened to the score many times before, but haven’t watched the movie until now. Unfortunately I found it to be fairly predictable and routine, but worth watching because of Burt Reynolds screen presence and the film score. Watched on March 2nd.

4. Deadwood - The Movie (2019) Streaming on Max. Not as good as the TV-series, but nice to see all the characters again and how the future was developing in the old west. It made me want to watch the series again, so that’s a plan after the challenge. Watched on March 5th.

5. Hatfields and McCoys (2012) TV-miniseries on Sony Blu-ray. I liked this series, but maybe not as much as I thought I would. At times it felt too long and like a historic re-enactment, but since it was produced by the History channel I understand that. For the most part it carries good performances, I especially liked seeing Tom Berenger in a not so heroic role. I would recommend this series for anyone who hasn’t seen it. Watched on March 8th and 9th.

6. Bugs Bunny Rides Again (1948) Cartoon watched on Bugs Bunny 80th Anniversary Collection Blu-ray. I re-watched this wonderful cartoon this morning. I remember watching this many times on (Super-8 I think) when I was a child, so it felt nostalgic to watch it again. For some strange reason I remember that we didn't have sound on the projector, I have never got an answer why, but it didn't diminish my enjoyment then because just the visuals by themselves are so strong and fun. Watching it today made me very happy and I will probably rewatch it soon again. I thought that I had the cartoon on DVD, but I didn't, so I ordered the Bugs Bunny box set. Watched on March 15th.

7. Slow West (2015) Digital rental. Unusual, tragic and almost poetic. I liked this movie very much. After a slow start it keeps adding more characters and the tension increases. Good performances over all, nice film score and wonderful cinematography. Watched on March 16th.

8. The Dead Don’t Hurt (2023) Digital HD Streaming. Nice low-key western/drama told in a non-linear narrative. As the story switches between the past and the present of the western setting, you get to know the characters and follow them to the inevitable conclusion. Watched on March 17th.

9. Last Stand at Saber River (1997) Digital HD iTunes. Good solid western with Tom Selleck and Suzy Amis. I liked this and it kept me interested until the end. Watched on March 22nd.

10. The Proposition (2005) DVD. Violent, brutal and fascinating western set in Australia in the 1880’s. Filled with great performances by Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone, Danny Huston, John Hurt and Emily Watson. Great cinematography by Benoit Delhomme and a poetic film score by Nick Cave (he wrote the script as well) and Warren Ellis. Interesting bonus material on the DVD. Watched on March 23d.

11. Lawmen: Bass Reeves (2023) Streaming.
Pretty good series with many good performances, interesting storylines and told from a perspective I haven’t seen very often.
8 episodes watched between March 24-29

12. Broken Trail (2006) Sony Blu-ray. Wonderful mini series with many fine performances and beautiful scenes. I bought this many years ago, but hadn’t watched it. So glad I did and I enjoyed the story told with some unexpected turns. Watched on March 30th.

I planned to watch more westerns for the challenge, but I didn’t have as much time as I thought. Maybe next time. Glad to be a part of this year’s western challenge.

Regular Cast: Roger Moore, Dorothy Provine, Jeff York. Recurring Cast: Ray Danton, Frank DeKova. I had never heard of this series before it was announced last year. I would like to highlight another blind buy from Warner Archive, their blu-ray presentation of another unknown to me Western, Colt .45 !
I had never heard of this one at all. Plenty of buzz about an unheard of series being given the Warner Archive blu treatment. It was a Western and the price was right so I made a blind buy. So glad I did. I have really enjoyed the tight thirty minute stories. Wayde Preston makes a right convincing Government agent in a Clint Walker type of way. Donald May does the best he can and was OK in his brief showing. Truly don't understand the studio politics that affected Warner's TV leads. I am nearing the end of the ride on this series and watched 7 episodes.

Do we list all the movies and shows in one post or do we just continue to post normally?

My first entry in the contest comes from the “not so good” camp. Conquest of Cochise is a Columbia B-movie from 1953, shot in Technicolor and directed by none other than "master of the gimmicks", William Castle. Robert Stack stars as a military officer whose job it is to negotiate peace between the Comanches, Apaches, and the Mexican population. John Hodiak plays Cochise, an ally who also wants peace, but Stack must first prove to the Natives that it was not a soldier who ambushed Cochise and killed his wife. My purchase was from iTunes, and it is a decent, though not great, transfer with good color, but occasional fringing of the 3-strip Technicolor matrices. A somewhat enjoyable, but low budget and stiffly-acted Western to start off the challenge. I rate it 2-stars.
