1. Watch 13 Scary/Horror/Halloween-Themed films, etc. from midnight October 1, 2024 through October 31, 2024 (use your own time zone to set the ending time).

2. Theatrically released films and short features count as 1 point each. Running times are irrelevant. TV specials (e.g. "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!") and individual episodes of anthology TV series (e.g. "The Twilight Zone") also count as 1 point each. For episodic TV series, 2 hour-long episodes (e.g. "The Walking Dead") count as 1 point and 3 episodes of 30 minute-long episodes (e.g. "The Munsters") count as 1 point.

3. Two of the 13 films, et. al. must be new discoveries, movies you've never seen before. The point of this is to see those few movies you've always meant to see, but never got around to. Please specify new discoveries in your film list by making them bold, adding asterisks, different colors, etc.

4. Come here and talk about 'em.

5. There is an uber-category, the Ultimate Splatter Challenge for those who wish to put all of the rest of us to shame. This is the heavyweight division. These people, if they choose to accept the challenge, must view 31 horror/scary/Halloween themed movies before dawn on Nov. 1st. Ten new discoveries are recommended for this one. The rest of us will bow down in awed reverence to these truly "Splatterific" HTF members. The bragging rights will be awesome and long lived. What movies qualify? If you wanna include it, go for it. There will be no hairsplitting. If The Wizard of Oz sends you to the dresser for a fresh pair of boxer shorts, all the power.

6. At the end of the challenge, the totals will be added up based on the point system outlined in number 2 above.

Didn't Get Around to Watching: Another year without watching THE SHINING mini-series. I had a box set of Edgar Wallace krimis that I didn't even open. Kino's The Classic Ghosts collection but Amazon didn't drop this off until Halloween night so..... Maybe next year!

Only 33 points this year, I did that in one week a few years ago.

11 new watches, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse being the best and the reboot of the Town that Dreaded Sundown the absolute worst!

Hopefully next October I'll be settled in to my new home, only be working one job, and will be able to take a week or so off. But even then I can't imagine reaching the totals of some of y'all.

To conserve space, I spoilerized my list above but to sum up, I watched 102 movies with three new viewings (Terrifier, Terrifier 3 and Smile 2). Of those new viewings, Smile 2 was easily the best of the lot.

Like every year, I use this as a way to rewatch my favorites so I had fun.

Here is my final list. It was another fun year. I found a few new films that I really enjoyed, although my favorite was The Substance by far. It was simply fantastic on all levels of production. Remarkable film that like Infinity Pool and Late Night with the Devil are new classics for me that I'll watch year-in, year-out. Another standout for me was MadS.

I had to be away from the forum for a few weeks, but I continued the challenge and am posting the end of my viewings now.

October 16,
9) Psycho (1960) - Theatrical screening
Hitchcock's only true horror film.

October 17,
10) Fear Street Part 1: 1994 (2021) First Time Watch
A witch was killed in 1666. Since then her spirit has possessed people from her town causing them to murder others. I had no idea Maya Hawke was in this movie.
11) The Resident 2X06 - "Nightmares" (2018) First Time Watch
A patient keeps having nightmares where slasher type serial killers are trying to kill her.

October 21,
12) The Resident 3X04 - "Belief System" (2019) First Time Watch
A couple claims to be vampires. A well known online racist claims to have multiple personality disorder. Two black surgeons get stuck in a small town where the locals treat them strangely. Guest stars include Jonathan Lipnicki and the science teacher from Stranger Things. Directed by Ti West.

October 22,
13) Halloween (1978) Theatrical Viewing
The John Carpenter classic in which 15 years after killing his sister, Michael Myers escapes the mental institute and stalks baby sitters.

October 23,
14) The Shining (1980) Theatrical Viewing
Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of the Stephen King novel.

October 24,
15) The Resident 5X05 - "The Thinnest Veil" (2021) First Time Watch
Another Halloween episode of the medical drama.

October 25,
16) Poltergeist 2: The Other Side (1986) First Time Watch
A disappointing follow up to the classic original.

October 28,
17) Halloween II (1981) Theatrical Viewing
A good sequel to the 1978 classic. This has a lot in common with the much more recent Halloween Kills especially with all the hospital scenes.

October 29,
18) Fear Street 2: 1978 (2021) - First Time Viewing
Fear Street continues. This time at a summer camp in 1978. Sadie Sink was incredible as always.

October 30,
19) The Lost Boys (1986) - Theatrical Viewing
Joel Schumacher's Ultra-Glossy 80's vampire movie with a spectacular cast.

October 31,
20) Fear Street 3: 1666 (2021) - First Time Viewing
The origins of the curse are revealed in 1666, then the series wraps up and concludes in 1994.

21) The Thing (1982) - First Time Viewing
John Carpenter's classic SciFi/Horror film. Surprised he wasn't the composer. Reminds me a lot of Alien.

Here's my final numbers. The weekend got away from me!

Movies Total: 76
Movie First Time Watches: 67
TV (all first timers): 3 series, 27 hour long episodes for 13.5 points
Total points 89.5.

First year in a while I didn't hit or break 100, due to ALL THE THINGS HAPPENING that took time away from viewing. Disappointing.

Favourites new discoveries:
The Substance
Dahmer

Worst Watched:
Poltergeist (2015) - It's rare I actively hate a film when I watch it, but here I did.

Overall, despite the disappointment and mental health loss of not watching more of what I wanted, I mostly had a strong year with "good" films outweighing the bad. Most of the newer crop of horror form the past few years mostly impressed me. I'm digging the female focused horror boom. I wasn't able to interact with all you horrible horror people as much as I would have liked, but I enjoyed reading all of your thoughts.

I'll probably be in next year. I still want to run a chronological franchise run starting with the early 70s and see how far I can get.

Well, my viewings got derailed around 10/28, so this is my last entry. Sorry for taking so long to add this and tally things up!

OCTOBER 31, 2024
35) The Wolfman (2010) (iTunes 4K Streaming) 3/5
- A remake of the legendary 1941 film starring Lon Chaney Jr., The Wolfman starts out on a somewhat promising foot but goes off the rails in the last third of the movie. Featuring, IMO, a horribly miscast Benicio del Toro in the role of Larry Talbot, this Wolfman is much bloodier and far more over the top than the original, which almost seems quaint in comparison, and I don't mean that in a bad way. Anthony Hopkins also seems out of place as the elder Talbot, and even the lovely Emily Blunt appears to be mostly bored with the proceedings. There are a few standout moments, including a very convincing transformation scene in a medical school lecturing theater, but in the end, it's a disappointing film that feels long at 1 hour and 43 minutes.
